About me and my therapy practice
I am a skilled and qualified therapist with nearly 30 years experience working specifically with women and young people who suffer from anxiety, low self esteem and depression and those who may have experienced trauma.
My areas of expertise are working with survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault and I work with a feminist approach to counselling, focusing on the particular challenges and stressors that women face as a result of stereotyping, oppression and discrimination that threaten their mental health.
I work creatively and collaboratively with you and offer a warm and empathic environment.
As an integrative counsellor, I utilise many different methods of working which can help you find clarity, empowerment and personal understanding.
Practice description
Counselling nurtures new ideas and perspective’s and by shining a light on all that you are and have experienced, we find understanding and clarity.
The truth is, not everyone can express themselves through words and so I will work creatively with you to encourage you to find a way of sharing your experiences so that you might learn from them. We may use paint or pens in order to connect with the suppressed self.
We will work together to forge a truer understanding of who you are and why. It is from this place of integration that we can make healthier choices that will serve us well going forward. We cannot erase the past, but if we can understand it’s impact on us, we can choose how we operate in the future.
Self knowledge is power, and it is in understanding the impact of early life attachments, connecting and integrating the Inner Child, learning how our brain works and the impact of trauma on the body that will lead you to a liberation and personal empowerment you didn’t know how to reach.
I am also able to teach you some somatic/breath work techniques to assist in your journey of self discovery.
My first session
I offer a free 15/20 minute discussion either on the phone or in person so that we both feel comfortable embarking on the counselling journey together. It’s important to me that you feel comfortable in the space and with me.
I work from a quiet cabin in my garden which is private and peaceful.
At our first session I will ask you to complete a short assessment and sign a contract which will detail the ‘house keeping’ of the counselling.
Each session is 50 minutes and I usually suggest we work weekly for the first 6 weeks and then take a moment to review where we are, what has helped and what are the next steps.
We then agree together how you would like to proceed or whether you have received what you needed from the work we have done.
I offer short term and longer term counselling as required.
