About me and my therapy practice
My name is Dr Peter Slater, I am an adult psychodynamic psychotherapist. I am a consultant child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapist having trained and undertaken my doctorate at the Tavistock clinic in London in 2008. I offer assessments, family and parent consultations and offer long term and short term work.
I work with children as young as 3 years old and adolescents as well as parents and families. I have undertaken a mentalisation based training in family therapy (MBT- F).
I have worked in NHS CAMHS settings for 12 years and in private practice for 18 years. In 2015 I became Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead for a child psychotherapy training programme in New Zealand which I designed and implemented.
Currently I am a Visiting Lecturer at the Tavistock Clinic and Heguang University in China. I offer clinical supervision and tutor doctoral students and trainee psychotherapists as well as working clinically with adults and children and young people in private practice in Central London.
I am now fully trained to offer comprehensive Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC/ASD) Assessments and Diagnosis for children and adults having completed the ADOS training.
I offer supervision for psychotherapists and psychiatrists wanting to think about their work from a psychoanalytic frame.
I have published a number of clinical papers in peer reviewed journals and a recent chapter on anxiety in a book devoted to psychopathology.
I have worked with complex and enduring presentations with both adults and children and offer report writing, consultations to schools and social care. I have worked with complex and severe presentations in adolescents and young people which include suicidal ideation, self harming behaviours, eating disorders and learning issues.
The use of the title Dr in this directory listing relates to the member’s doctorate qualification. However, this does not imply a general medical qualification.
Practice description
I am a psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic psychotherapist working with both children, young people, adults and couples. This form of psychotherapy focusses on a deep exploration of the presenting issues and allows patients to gain a better understanding of themselves while allowing or modification of problematic states of mind, emotional states and behavioural presentations.
My work with children allows for improvements in development a that has been stuck or impinged upon dnd reduction in symptoms and a better regulation of troubling emotional states. I offer comprehensive assessments and screening for Autistic Spectrum Disorder/condition for children, teenagers and adults along with ongoing therapy and parent support.
My first session
The first session is an initial consultation where I gather background information and history of your presenting issues and am happy to answer any questions you may have about the ongoing psychotherapy work. For the best results weekly psychotherapy is often indicated, but shorter term work is also an option depending on severity of the difficulties.
