About me and my therapy practice

Hello my name is Marie Watkins. I am a counselling psychotherapist accredited with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.  I have 20 years of experience working in a variety of settings.    I work with individuals offering short term therapy, solution focused therapy and longer term open ended therapy.

My own experience of therapy was a transformative one, helping me to achieve meaningful change. It was this positive experience that was the driving force behind my decision to train as a therapist so that I could help others in a similar way.

There are many reasons why people seek counselling or therapy.  Life can be challenging with experiences such as relationship difficulties, bereavement, loss of employment, to name but a few.  At times we can experience significant change and loss. We can be left with feelings of low mood and anxiety and struggle to make sense of our experience. Maybe we realise that difficult past events or life experiences continue to affect us as unhelpful patterns keep us feeling stuck and powerless with little sense of a way forward. Modern day life can leave us struggling to balance work, family and relationships resulting in us experiencing feelings of failure, self doubt and lack of confidence. We may realise that ‘something isn’t quite right’ but be unsure as to what is happening or why we are thinking and feeling the way that we do.

I believe that therapy can help us to work through the impact that life experiences can have upon our sense of ourselves. What (perhaps) has caused us to develop the vulnerabilities we have? It can provide a confidential safe space where we can begin to work towards identifying unconscious motivations/beliefs that can underpin our difficult confusing thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Using the counselling space can help us to come to a better understanding of ourselves which in turn can provide healing, growth and more resilient mental health.

Practice description

As a Psychodynamic Counsellor I can help people gain insight into their lives and the difficulties one might experience through exploring their emotions, thoughts, early life experiences and beliefs.

This can help identify recurring patterns and develop understanding how these patterns may have come into being. Through the development of this self-awareness and acceptance people can begin to affect positive change.

I am also a qualified and accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist.  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that rests on the idea that thoughts and perceptions influence behavior. Feeling distressed, in some cases, may distort one’s perception of reality. CBT aims to identify unhelpful thoughts, assess whether they are an accurate depiction of reality, and, if they are not, employ strategies to challenge and overcome them.

My first session

If you were to contact me, I would arrange an agreed time for us to have a free half hour consultation to discuss what you are looking for in terms of therapy.  I will spend some of this time explaining what I am able to offer you.  I hope through this consultation you will be able to make an informed decision as to whether you wish to go ahead with therapy.

Our first appointment will be a chance for us to begin to get to know each other.  we will complete an assessment together.  This process can be helpful in clearly identifying what has encouraged you to access therapy.

We will also spend some time in considering what you might like to achieve through therapy.  This can be helpful in making sure that the focus of your sessions are linked very much to your own needs.

I currently offer sessions on a face to face basis or via Zoom (a secure online meeting platform).

Therapy Sessions last for 50-60 minutes. Fees are per session not per hour. Sessions are held on an agreed day and time. Sessions are normally weekly but may be fortnightly or at other intervals by agreement – often weekly is best at the beginning as we are getting to know each other and gaining some understanding of the situation.

Not all types of issues can be resolved through counselling and I will advise you if I consider talking therapy would not be the most suitable means of support at this time. Should this be the case, I will endeavour to assist you in a referral or signpost you to a suitable alternative source of support.
