About me and my therapy practice

Are you living with the symptoms of emotional ‘trauma’, distressing memories and emotional triggers? Is this making life, work and relationships more difficult? Perhaps you experience flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, panic, phobias, anger?

Together we can use Internal Family Systems' therapy with EMDR therapy to compassionately engage with your self. IFS is an amazing modern therapy that reveals that your 'problems' are actually your nervous system trying to help you. We can befriend your troubled 'parts' and use EMDR to process burdens from the past. We can connect compassionately to your inner child.

My name is Johnnie Taylor. I am a Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Registered psychodynamic therapist, specialising in Internal Family Systems’ (IFS) therapy. I am also an EMDR Association registered therapist. I am registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council. I have a 20-year background in NHS liaison psychiatry and in GP surgeries. I can help with complex difficulties.

I integrate Internal Family Systems’ and trauma (EMDR) therapies, to help you with relationship issues going back to experiences of neglect, abuse and abandonment. Often these early childhood problems show up as complex adult issues.

Practice description

The integration of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a truly compassionate and loving therapy, very popular in the NHS and across the world.

With this simple integrated approach, you will learn to love all parts of yourself, even troubling protector parts like panic and social anxiety; and parts of you that you avoid relating to authentically like shame; and then you can begin to melt away any history of 'trauma' or negative adverse events.

Historically, post-traumatic stress disorder was spotted with army vets coming back from war zones, it was called shell shock. What helped was bilateral stimulation and reprocessing of traumatic memories. But the EMDR Association worked out that lots of troubled people had similar issues. It is obvious really. 'Symptoms' are alarms prodding you to 'watch out!' And they can get very very busy.

This scenario of busy alarm parts is such a common experience for so many people. The IFS people also realised that behind the alarm system are forgotten or 'exiled' parts. For example shame, fears of abandonment, somatising parts that embed emotional problems deep into the body. Much of the deeper stuff is evidence of poor experiences in childhood. Parts' therapy often needs a boost of EMDR due to the intense suffering of your inner child. That's why IFS began to integrate EMDR creating a dynamic repairing and healing synergy.

Racquel says: "It was an amazing year in therapy with you. You have a soft and gentle approach instead of forcing an interaction or experience, which made me feel comfortable and safe in every session. Considering I had bad experiences with therapy beforehand, doing therapy with you felt really refreshing. I feel like my life improved in general, and that was my end goal. Thank you for everything!" My first session

Your first session is an opportunity to use the space to explore and discover what really is the ‘core focus’ of your therapy. There will be time to hear your stories and your history and i will begin to make sense of how you are showing up in your life. Maybe you lack confidence or you find you always end up in abusive relationships.

Themes will emerge. Hope will be established. We can work out a strategy together with some goals. I want you to know you’ll be orchestrating your desired results. I will walk alongside you. But you will be in charge. My job is to provide some techniques and approaches that i know really work.

Availability

Hello

Thank you for your connection, I have limited availability but i'm happy to find a space for individual sessions. Times normally available are daytime during the week and Monday and Tuesday evenings.

The sessions are normally 50 minutes but some people prefer a longer session of 90 minutes and to have fortnightly sessions. What i do is assess what is best for you, in that sometimes more regularity at the beginning of therapy is best. And then we can taper things as we make progress.

Trauma-informed therapy is about regulating and calming down your nervous system and reducing any busy 'symptoms' i.e. anxiety or panic, allowing yourself to be more in Self, and less directed by fearful parts of you.

So sometimes we apply some grammar to the sessions with some regularity and containment to allow you space to manage situations and your relationships.

In my experience if you have some significant issues and difficulties you ought to consider coming for a year, but i can work with singular issues ie social anxiety in about six to twelve sessions depending on the severity of the problem.

About me and my therapy practice

After working a long-time in the NHS and adopting the 'remove symptoms' approach to psychological therapy and counselling, I began to see people's difficulties through the lens of 'trauma'. That is, your body is talking to you through your 'symptoms' and distress as a way of trying to keep you safe. These problems i.e. intrusive thoughts, anxiety, worry, avoidance, addiction, fear, low self-esteem, PTSD, depression, OCD, even psychosis, are ways your nervous system is trying to either send you an alarm or shut you down and hide you. So when we adopt a trauma focused approach to helping you, we actually begin to listen and notice your feelings and start to befriend your busy or shut-down 'parts', there is an almost immediate calming of your sense of self.
This 'fight v flight' (and freeze, fawn, and collapse) approach to understanding your Self and your body is a compassionate approach to understanding mental health, and understood by people like Gabor Mate and Bessel Van Der Kolk. Moreover, physical and somatic problems, like migraines, chronic pain, poor sleep, workaholicism, can be understood in the same way. And your tendency to get in abusive relationships or sabotage yourself are also parts of you trying to help you. Often the beginnings of these issues stem from neglect, abuse and abandonment in childhood, i.e. emotional trauma.

Using Internal Family Systems' therapy and Eye movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) we can make really life-changing progress with your mental and physical health. This is especially so when we integrate IFS and EMDR. This isn't about processing a singular trauma ie a car crash. This is more about using these approaches to helping you take control of your Self and your nervous system and reducing suffering and reclaiming your inner child and confidence and well-being. When we do this your whole system is re-regulated and you become safer, happier, kinder, and relate better to yourself and others.

Practice description

Trauma therapy is in many ways an approach to therapy full of creativity and compassion. Often there is an inner child inside, trapped in the past, and we can reconnect to resolve and unburden the child within. I also use meditation techniques and tapping, and imaginal and visual techniques.

The integration of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a truly compassionate and loving therapy, very popular in the NHS and across the world.

I’m a certified IFS1 practitioner and am passionate about Internal Family Systems. I believe your problematic ‘symptoms’ are a way that your body has come to express itself. Once we learn its language we can befriend all these parts of you.

My first session

We can have a free, confidential 30 minute talk on Zoom or whatsapp to assess your needs and formulate a way forward in a non- judgemental and friendly way.

You can also text me confidentially on 07525 456544 and i will get back to you. Thank you, keep well.

The first few sessions are a chance to get to know each other and see if there is a good fit and you feel comfortable.

We can do some assessment of your past present and future and what you want to achieve with your therapy and your goals.

I tend to be quite focused and i don't spend eons of time intellectually analysing your childhood. If we need to find out about your childhood we can actually ask your inner child using attachment-focused EMDR.

Morever, when we listen you your body and nervous system, and notice how you feel, this is where we are locating where we need to go. Everything is being said, we just need to listen.

If you have specific trauma ie being abused or bullied or attacked, we can use EMDR. If your problems are more pervasive ie you had a narcissistic partner or parent, we can befriend the wounded parts of you and begin to calm these upset parts down and make them feel safe again.

I have enough experience and intuition to be able to locate issues even if you are not sure, because i have conducted probably a thousand psychiatric assessments in hospitals over many years, before i began working privately.
