About me and my therapy practice

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience of working with individuals in many varied settings including the NHS, charities and various London universities, as well as having had a private practice for several years.

I offer a kind, curious and compassionate space to explore the difficulties you are experiencing. I have worked with many different issues including childhood trauma, family relationships and estrangement, anxiety, depression, illness and bereavement, perfectionism, marriage and relationship difficulties (please note I do not offer couples therapy) and academic and work pressures.

Practice description

It can be hugely helpful to have a confidential space to share one's thoughts, feelings, worries and preoccupations.  I can offer help in making sense of and understanding what you are feeling. The sessions are not structured by me and will be led by what you bring to them; this can sometimes feel difficult to begin with but it can also be liberating and can lead to making important links, recognising themes and to an increased understanding of yourself in a way that can really help you going forward.

I offer open-ended therapy. Shorter term work tends to need to focus on one particular problem, longer term allows for the time to explore many different aspects of one's external life, inner emotional life, memories and experiences. In general we can all frequently repeat long laid-down negative patterns of thinking and relating; psychotherapy has, over time, the potential to bring about a greater awareness of these patterns which can then enable one to choose different ways of relating and thinking. You may not be sure what may suit your needs best, we can see how it goes and feels. Once we have agreed a time and day for ongoing appointments, that space is yours for as long as you feel it is needed, bar the usual holiday breaks (Christmas, Easter and summer) .

My first session

To begin with we would meet for a 1 hour no-obligation initial consultation ideally in person (but Zoom is also possible). The cost of this consultation is £85.

This time will be to begin to explore the issues that have brought you to therapy. I may ask some questions about your background, such as around work, family and relationships, however, the consultation is led by what you feel you want to bring to it and usually those subjects arise naturally.

It is also the beginning of experiencing a reflective and containing space where we can begin to understand, and possibly make some links, to the issues you bring. This is, of course, also an opportunity for you to see whether you feel comfortable with me; we can also think together as to whether this will be the best kind of support for you.

At the end of the consultation we can either make a further appointment; it sometimes takes several sessions to see if you feel you would like to settle into a weekly routine of talking therapy; or you can get in touch with me after the consultation to let me know whether you may like to have another appointment.
