About me and my therapy practice
I’m an integrative, relational counsellor, which means that I use different approaches to respond to what it is that you need. My practice is rooted in person centered theories, which mean I want to create a safe space for you to feel understood and deeply accepted. I draw from systemic theories, transactional analysis and gestalt approaches, and work from a trauma informed perspective.. I will support you to reconnect to parts of yourself that might feel, so that you can be more authentic in your life and relationships.
I work by supporting you to increase your awareness: making connections between how you think, feel and behave; and understanding how what happened in the past impacts you in the here and now. I provide a space for you to pay attention to what’s going on: noticing what is happening in your body and mind, and allowing you to feel your feelings in a supported way.
I believe that the relationship between counsellor and client is really important. That means that I try to offer you a space where you can feel safe, understood and accepted. I might ask you questions about how you feel when we are together, and use that as a way to understand other relationships in your life. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe enough to take risks, and try out new ways of being in relationship with yourself and others.
Practice description
I have a lot of experience working with people who have experienced different kinds of trauma, particularly sexual violence, and other forms of interpersonal abuse in both childhood and adulthood. I find joy in coming alongside clients to support their growth, and believe that everyone has the capacity to flourish regardless of what has happened. I can support you to manage some of the distressing results of trauma, like flashbacks and nightmares, as well as to process all of the difficult feelings that you might be having. The world can feel like a completely different place after experiencing trauma, and I'm here to help you work through this.
I also have a lot of experience working with the LGBTQ+ community, and have an affirming approach to my practice. I welcome supporting people who are questioning their gender identity, or sexual orientation and want some space to think this through.
I have a diploma in integrative counselling and psychotherapy, and prior to counselling I worked as a social worker, support worker and youth worker.
My first session
I welcome questions, and I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation where we can chat about what you need, and what I can offer. If you decide to start counselling with me, then in our first session we will spend some time exploring what you need for the therapeutic process, and how I might be able to help.
