About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Sara Douglas and I am a pluralistic counsellor. This means I bring theories from a number of approaches, such as person centred, psychodynamic and CBT, to fit each client individually. This allows us to talk about your past, present and future and how they, potentially, might tie together.
I moved to Liverpool to study and, on completing a degree, I commenced a career in hospitality working my way up to a managerial position. Whilst I gained many skills and knowledge which I now consider invaluable in informing my counselling practice, the experience also led to symptoms of burnout. I was working late nights, early mornings; the sleep deprivation and the pressure of the job resulted in overwhelming stress and anxiety. I had never experienced this before and felt like my body wasn’t my own at times. Personal experience of stress, anxiety, burnout, overwhelm and grief, led to my counselling journey. I understand how a variety of issues and difficulties can impact day to day functioning and relationships and how distressing it can be to feel out of control of your own emotions. Talking therapy can enable emotional regulation and make space to feel calmer and more focused.
I understand that starting counselling can be a daunting experience. I am passionate about helping, supporting and encouraging you and I will offer a safe, non-judgemental environment for you to feel comfortable and talk through things at your own pace.
Practice description
The basic principle of pluralistic therapy is that different people are helped by different processes and activities at different times, and that the best way of deciding on how therapy should proceed is to engage the client in a process of shared decision-making.
Person-centred therapy is client based, it is there to help you become more self aware of your emotions, and allows you to take control of your mental health. My role is to provide a non-judgmental space for you to explore and grow.
Psychodynamic therapy is a form of in-depth talk therapy that aims to bring unconscious or deeply buried thoughts and feelings to the conscious mind so that repressed experiences and emotions, often from childhood, can be brought to the surface and examined. In Psychodynamic therapy we are more of an alliance, using techniques appropriate to your state of mind.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of talking therapy. It's a common treatment for a range of mental health problems. CBT teaches you coping skills for dealing with different problems. It focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and actions. My role would be to listen, teach and encourage, your role is to express concerns, learn, and implement that learning.
I completed a year of hypnotherapy training before commencing my counselling qualification. It is effective in helping people gain freedom from stress, anxiety, depression and phobias. It can also be a useful tool in sessions to enable you to feel relaxed and find a safe space when you are feeling emotionally dysregulated.
