About me and my therapy practice

I base my counselling style on a Person-Centred approach. This essentially means that the client is at the centre of my practice, and the sessions revolve around what the client wants to speak about.

It is the belief of many Person-Centred therapists that each of us hold within us an inherent impulse and all that we need to move through and towards a truly authentic and fulfilling life. It's the aim (for want of a better word) of the therapy that I offer to provide a safe and non-judgemental space for my clients to move towards that, almost as if it is an inevitability.

It isn’t in my interest to ‘diagnose and fix problems’ that my clients may believe they have – more to assist and journey with my clients through their problematic experiences, towards their own discovery of self-authenticity. I almost never offer advice or solutions, or try and fix anything for my clients, as I believe my clients can find these things for themselves.

When clients do find their own way it's far more likely to have a more significant and longer lasting impact.

Practice description

I offer face to face sessions from my comfortable therapy space here in Hayle, Cornwall and also online or phone sessions if required or preferred.

Prior to an initial session I offer a free 30 minute chat within which both my clients and I get a feel for how working together might be; there is an opportunity for my clients to ask questions; and I will request some important information that will then allow us to book in an initial session.

My first session

Before our first session, and in the first instance, I request that my clients complete my '30min Call Booking Form' – which is an expression of interest to work with me, on my website. I’ll then send an email or text message with a couple of times that we can have an initial 30 minute chat.

This call is an opportunity for my clients to ask questions about the counselling I provide, and for us both to see if a first session would be the right next thing. If it looks like that would be the case I will then ask a few important questions before my client books in and pays for their first session (this information and any information I hold of my clients is stored securely).

The first session consists of my client and I making an agreement in the first place – a contract to which we can hold each other to. This includes fundamentally important things such as confidentiality, agreements around timings and attendance, and payments.

Following the formation of the agreement, the space is ready for the counselling to begin, which is almost always within the first session, after the agreement has been made.

Sessions then continue until a natural ending occurs, or a pause in counselling is appropriate. My clients and I review how the sessions are going every 6 sessions, to then agree either a continuation, a pause, or an ending.
