I offer online counselling via a number of platforms.
My availability is from 9am to 7pm Monday to Thursday.
About me and my therapy practice
In my practice I draw on the theoretical approaches of Transactional Analysis, Person-Centred Counselling and Gestalt. It is my belief that everyone has the capacity to think and to change, and that we can look to our early years and relationships for clues as to the difficulties we experience in our present. I believe we can acquire tools, techniques, and strategies that we can carry with us in our future. We all have the capacity to change outdated and unhelpful behaviours and learn how to interact with our world from a healthy ‘Adult’ state. We can learn to identify unhelpful ways of communicating, thinking, and feeling and make positive lifelong changes that lead to inner fulfilment and higher self-esteem.
Together we will explore some of your earliest childhood memories and emotions and seek parallels with your experiences of life today. We will trace the source of strong emotions in your present that will always resonate from an earlier time. Sometimes, really strong and overwhelming feelings are exact replays of the emotions we felt as a vulnerable and frightened child, and without the help of therapy, we can experience them as though we were still that child. Together we can access the resources you have as an adult to calm the clamour of your frightened inner child. You will learn tools and techniques that allow you to cope, and remove self-defeating patterns of behaviour that have harmed you and your relationships in the past.
It is possible to free ourselves from the impact of negative childhood experiences or negative messages that we absorbed and thought of as truths. We can create new and positive truths about ourselves that can open doors to better relationships, career prospects and happiness.
Practice description
I can offer you a warm greeting in a safe, confidential environment. I appreciate how much strength is required in taking that first step towards seeking help outside your usual circles of support. I acknowledge that for many it can feel like a weakness, that you have failed in some way, and that this adds yet another layer to the pain you're in.
I want to assure you of the strength you are showing in facing your doubts and fears and in examining the sources of your unhappiness.
I will listen without judgement and provide you with the space you need to explore what matters to you. I am an Integrative counsellor, drawing on a number of theoretical approaches to assist in exploring the issues you bring to our sessions. I will focus on things that have happened to you in your past that might be influencing what you are experiencing today. Many of the clues to our present turmoil can be found in the childhood we survived.
I have a particular interest in those from LGBTQ backgrounds who are struggling with their sexuality/coming out. This might be from the perspective of your own journey, or being part of the journey of a loved one.
Other interests of mine are working with those who have experienced the childhood trauma of alcoholic parents, parents with mental health diagnoses or those who have lost someone to suicide.
I also recognise the impact of bereavement for the loss of a beloved pet and how this type of grief can often be minimised or not fully understood in wider society.
I am flexible in my approach, offering open-ended sessions, or short blocks of time. This will be dependent on your individual preference and circumstances.
Clients often talk about feeling lighter after they finally begin to shine a light on long suppressed pain. It is my great privilege to help you hold that torch.
My first session
We will arrange your first session after you have had a chat with me over the phone. The phone call I offer lasts for around fifteen minutes and is free of charge. This allows us to establish the reasons you are seeking counselling and whether this is something I am able to help with.
The first session can be face to face or virtual using a number of platforms.
The first session allows you to freely talk about what is on your mind and I will mainly listen. If you find it hard to talk at first, I can ask some questions, or give you the space to gather your thoughts. Silence is ok. First sessions can feel daunting.
At the end of the session I will suggest some ways I might be able to help, as well as ask you what you would like to focus on first. we can establish the number of sessions if this is helpful, or leave them open. There is no pressure to agree to any set number. We will also establish your preferred days and times for your sessions.
