About me and my therapy practice

I am a warm and empathic psychodynamic counsellor, with a background as a scientist in NHS cancer services, followed by a career in community education and support work, where I worked with people experiencing depression, anxiety, bereavement, trauma, addictions, domestic abuse and homelessness.

We all experience difficulties in life, no matter what our background. We may feel anxious, depressed, discouraged or overwhelmed. We may adopt unhelpful coping mechanisms, such as drinking too much or using legal or illegal drugs, or self-harm, or exercising too much, or eating too much, or too little. Sometimes, we are able to think through these issues on our own, or get through them with the support of family and friends, but sometimes we may feel the need to seek additional help from a professional counsellor.

My approach to counselling is psychodynamic, which evolved from the premise that we often unconsciously repeat patterns laid down in childhood, whether healthy or unhealthy. The unhealthy patterns can be difficult to understand on our own, but in the counselling relationship, we can explore the meaning of our experiences and learn how to change these patterns and be more true to ourselves.

Practice description

The depth of work we can do, is dependent on your preferences and the length of time we have, as I offer both short-term and open-ended counselling.

In short-term counselling, we could look at a specific difficulty or challenge in your life, or determine whether longer-term work would be useful to you. In open-ended counselling, we would have the time to explore your experiences at a deeper level. Sometimes this is labelled psychotherapy, but the terminology can be confusing and it may be more useful to discuss what you are looking for, with a therapist in person.

My first session

I offer a free initial consultation, in-person, in which you can tell me what you are hopiing for in counselling, what your concerns might be and whether I could help.

The practice at EH1 Therapies is in a basement flat in the West End of Edinburgh, accessed by a flight of stone steps. If this is inaccessible to you, please get in touch to discuss as an alternative venue in Stockbridge.
