My first session
In the initial session with couples, held at my practice in Upminster, I undertake a comprehensive assessment to gain insight into the dynamics of their relationship and the underlying issues they are facing. This assessment is crucial for tailoring our sessions to address their specific needs and goals effectively.
During this phase, I meet with the couple both collectively and individually. Through open-ended questions and active listening, I encourage each partner to share their perspective and experiences. This creates a safe environment for honest communication, where partners can express themselves freely.
In addition to exploring the couple's relationship as a whole, I also offer one-to-one sessions with each partner. These individual sessions provide a deeper exploration of their personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences, allowing us to address any personal issues or concerns that may be affecting their relationship.
By offering both couples and individual sessions, I provide a holistic approach to therapy that addresses the needs of each partner while also focusing on the dynamics of their relationship. This dual approach enables us to identify and work through core issues more effectively, fostering deeper understanding, empathy, and connection between partners.
Throughout the assessment process, I emphasize collaboration and transparency, encouraging couples to actively participate in their therapeutic journey. Together, we develop strategies for resolving issues and building a stronger, more resilient relationship.

My first session
The first session of therapy sets the foundation for the therapeutic journey, establishing a safe and collaborative space where individuals can feel heard, understood, and supported.
As the therapist, my primary goal is to create a welcoming and non-judgmental environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, feelings, and concerns.
The first part of the session is dedicated to conducting a thorough assessment of the clients' presenting issues, goals for therapy, and any relevant background information.
Together, we explore the challenges they wish to address, the outcomes they hope to achieve, and the strategies they believe will be most effective in reaching their goals. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of partnership and investment in the therapeutic process, laying the groundwork for meaningful progress and growth.
Throughout the session, I prioritise building rapport and trust with the clients, emphasising the importance of the therapeutic relationship in facilitating healing and transformation.
I emphasise the importance of confidentiality, privacy, and trust in maintaining a secure therapeutic environment. I assure clients that their confidentiality will be respected at all times and that the therapy room is a confidential space where they can feel free to explore their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or disclosure. By establishing clear boundaries and expectations around confidentiality and privacy.
In summary, the first session of therapy serves as an opportunity to assess clients' needs, collaboratively set goals, build rapport and trust, and create a secure therapeutic environment. By laying this foundation, we establish the groundwork for a productive and empowering therapeutic journey, allowing clients to bring their whole selves into the room and embark on a path of growth, healing, and self-discovery.
