About me and my therapy practice
Hello! I’m Jack. A warm, calm counsellor who will hold space for you to be 100% yourself. Our sessions are there to provide a non-judgemental space for you to explore what’s troubling you, helping you to get to know yourself better and feel more empowered and at peace.
I tailor my approach to you, drawing what I think will be helpful from humanistic, psychodynamic, parts work, mindfulness and somatic approaches.
My approach is relational at its heart, and my goal is that clients can feel safe enough in our relationship to start to explore some of the patterns that might emerge between us, use our relationship as a space to try out new things, and receive support that might not have been available in the past.
Practice description
I offer both short term (12, 18 and 24 weeks) and open-ended work, either online or in person.
What you can expect:
Our sessions are a space where you can explore themes from your life that are troubling you, as well as an opportunity to be with whatever is present for you on the day.
We might do a mix of mostly talking, with some mindfulness practices, some time spent noticing what you’re feeling in your body, and some time taking slow breaths to help regulate the nervous system, depending on what feels helpful to you and what I think would best support you. For some people, being in touch with their body can feel uncomfortable, difficult, or unsafe. I will always offer suggestions, not demand that you try things, and my way of working focuses on consent.
What can you talk about in our sessions?
You can talk about whatever you want to in our sessions, and when we start working together we can see if there are certain themes, or areas of your life that you’d like to specifically focus on. Previously, I have worked with clients bringing material from areas such as grief, sexuality, gender identity, sex (including kink and chemsex), anxiety and depression, abuse, relationships (including polyamory and ethical non-monogamy), work, family, activism, racism and structural injustice, ageing, self-harm, disordered eating and suicidal feelings.
I have worked for the past three years in a service offering low cost therapy for LGBTQIA+ and questioning people, and have both professional and lived experience with issues affecting these communities.
I am sex worker allied, anti-racist and trans-inclusive, and strive to provide a space where people with experiences of marginalization feel welcome, respected and safe.
I try to make my practice as accessible as possible. For detailed accessibility information please see the accessibility section on my website, and you're welcome to get in touch with any questions.
My first session
I offer a lower-cost first session (currently £40) so that we can meet, explore any goals or desires you might have for therapy, and get to know each other a bit.
When we first meet, I might ask you open questions such as, 'what brings you to therapy at this time?' as well as providing you with information about how I work and what I can offer you. Our first session is a good opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have about therapy in general, or my way of working, and for us to address any worries you might have about counselling.
I will always be honest about whether I think I can help you, and will only agree to working with you if I feel confident that I can be of genuine help and support to you.
Coming to counselling for the first time, (or coming back to counselling after a break), is not always an easy thing, and I commend you for doing this for yourself, making this time for you, and choosing to get to know yourself better.
