Availability
Just a quick note that I am often unavailable by phone due to being with clients, so if you call it will likely go to voicemail. Only I have access to my voicemails, so please feel free to leave a message in confidence. Alternatively you can text or email, which is the easiest way to get hold of me.
About me and my therapy practice
With so many options of different counsellors with different skills, specialties, interests and all the jargon to work through - it must feel like a minefield trying to find the right counsellor. Where do you start? And how will you know if you've found the right person?
My name is Emma. I'm 35, and I'm an integrative counsellor (that means I use a range of different ways of working, to find what works for you). I know I'm young and often potential clients wonder "what does she know?" - the truth is, I've been through a lot in my life, had a lot of counselling myself, and it massively informs my practice. I know what it's like to feel overwhelmed, to feel lost, to feel like a burden to others, and to believe that there's something wrong with you.
My role is to help you see that these (often very loud and convincing) narratives, are not the entire picture of you. You are so much more than the difficulties you are facing, but it's hard to see that when you're 'in it'.
I know how terrifying it can be to talk about things you don't even like to think about, or have pushed away. I also know what it feels like when you find the right counsellor, and have a safe space where you can be brave enough to tentatively explore parts of yourself, your life and how you see the world.
I'm qualified in person-centred counselling and am passionate about continued professional development. I'm currently undertaking a Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, with additional training in trauma, shame, attachment, suicide and self harm, safeguarding and mental health awareness. I have a degree in Psychology and I read, attend conferences, watch TED talks and listen to podcasts extensively to continue to develop my knowledge. I am LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse friendly, influenced not only by psychology and counselling theories, but by nature, spirituality and religion, financial and physical wellness and always work with the diversity and complexity of human experience in mind.
Practice description
It's a huge privilege that I might be the person that you trust to share things with, which is why I focus so much on you feeling safe to explore who you are - often by me being as 'me' as I can be, with you.
I'm not a counsellor who will just sit session after session and listen, nodding my head and 'hmmm' ing. I'm here to change lives. It sounds big and impressive, but I firmly believe that counselling has that power, in fact, I know it does, because I've done it myself, and I've seen it with my clients.
I practice from a room located on the first floor of Great Western House with a beautiful view across the river. Unfortunately there is no lift access and therefore my room isn't accessible for those with wheelchairs or mobility concerns. In these instances, I can offer online sessions.
My sessions are 50 minutes and are either face to face in Langport or online. My standard fee is £55 per session and there is no pressure to pay any more than this. However, I do work on a sliding scale up to £70 per session, should you wish to contribute a bit more, and if you are in a place to afford to. This would be much appreciated to help towards funding my work at River Counselling Services - https://www.rivercounsellingservices.co.uk - a low cost counselling agency which I founded in 2024 and continue to manage around my private work. This service provides the local community with affordable counselling by supporting trainee counsellors gain experience working with clients whilst studying, and also provides opportunities for connection within the counselling community, something that can be lacking for practitioners.
I also offer a limited number of concessionary rate slots for trainee counsellors and those working in mental health/counselling practitioners.
My first session
Because finding a counsellor can be a massive risk - I offer a free twenty minute chat either on the phone or ideally online (so we can see each other). To sound sale-sy for a second - there's no obligation. We can chat and you can immediately contact someone else if I'm not the counsellor for you, I'd only ever be happy for you, as it's so important that you find someone that's the right fit for this often vulnerable process.
If you then choose to work with me, I will take some further information from you and email you my client agreement. During the first session we will take some time to look at this together, to answer any questions you may have and make sure we are on the same page about working together, and what that might look like.
