About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Julie and welcome to my profile.

Are you someone who has experienced difficulties in your life that have left you feeling anxious, depressed, or alone and coping with day-to-day activities has become a chore? I offer a safe, confidential space to come alongside you as we work together to help you gain insight and self-awareness. A place where you are valued, accepted, and heard, time to look at your relationship with yourself and others. You do not need to feel alone.

I have worked for many years in education, supporting families and children with complex social, emotional, and behavioural needs. I have provided emotional and psychological support for young people and adults in schools, the community and within a prison. I specialise in working with people who have experienced complex trauma such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, family, or child abuse and families who have been affected by alcohol and substance misuse. I have further training and specialist knowledge in working with self-harm and suicidal ideation.

I have worked with the LGBTQ+ and transgender community and value diversity. I lived and worked within the Asian community where I supported families who were asylum seekers or refugees.

I work with a range of challenges including, but not limited to anxiety, depression, anger, loss, bereavement, trauma, domestic abuse, childhood sexual abuse, sexual abuse within relationships, addiction, health, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, shame, dissociation, pregnancy loss, menopause, ageing and relationships.

I work within the Psychodynamic method, an approach which uses the relationship we build to safely help you understand your emotions and behaviours, bringing to light unconscious patterns of behaviour that are not working for you. This theory originates from Sigmund Freud, focusing on the unconscious mind as the source of psychological distress.

Practice description

I am based in Grangemouth and offer face-to-face counselling in a dedicated space from a garden cabin. I also provide Online and telephone counselling, whichever suits your needs.

Sessions last for 50 minutes and are usually on the same day and time each week. If you choose to attend in person, there is free parking and accessible by wheelchair.

I offer a free 20-minute consultation prior to engaging with support. This allows us to get to know each other and enables you to ask any questions. It also gives you an opportunity to decide if you feel we can work together. Finding the right counsellor is crucial.

I offer a bespoke counselling service. 6 - 8 sessions are offered initially, however, this is flexible to suit your needs with longer-term counselling available. Progress will be reviewed regularly.

As a Psychodynamic therapist, I will work with you to safely help you understand your emotions and behaviours, bringing to light unconscious patterns that may no longer be working for you, as we explore past relationships and how they influence our present and future relationships.

Therapy is not done to you, the aim is that as you explore unresolved conflicts in your life you become empowered and positive lasting change is achieved.

My first session

During our first session, we will focus on the presenting issues that brought you to counselling. I will ask you to complete a short assessment and give you the opportunity to ask questions about the contract that I will have sent to you prior to our first appointment.

This first session may help you decide if you feel we can work together well. We will leave plenty of time to focus on you and space to tell your story.
