About me and my therapy practice
Accepting each person as unique I will work at your pace with compassion, empathy and non-judgement, to better understand your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Working together we will explore your emotions, relationships and experiences supporting self-healing and well-being.
I understand how important it is for you to find someone that you feel comfortable with to build a relationship of trust, I offer a free 20 minute telephone call for you to see if I am the right person for you and to ask any questions you may have about how I work. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
Adult counselling – As an adult coming to counselling you may feel sad, tense, lonely, angry or simply unable to feel calm or relaxed. You may be experiencing known trauma, have low self-esteem or feelings of guilt. Sometimes there can be complex feelings of being stuck or overwhelmed. Whatever brings you to counselling I offer a safe, non-judgemental space to share feelings and to gently explore, working towards self-healing.
Child and young person therapy – Working with children and young people I offer play therapy and diverse resources to choose from to explore well-being, including talking therapy. The complexities of growing up, transitions, managing difficult feelings and life events that bring children and young people to therapy can be explored.
Couples relationship therapy – Working with couples includes: married; non-married; family relationships (e.g. parent and child); and work relationships. Couples therapy provides a neutral, safe space to talk to each other, to be heard and to work with changes that you may be seeking.
I have a Level 4 Advanced diploma for Adult Counselling and Therapy, combined Level 5 and 6 Diploma for Children and Young People, and Couples Relationship Therapy training. Additional training and CPD includes complex trauma, anger and working with LGBTQ+ and more.
Practice description
I have set out some frequently asked questions to give an idea of how I practice and what to expect.
• What is your therapeutic approach? My training has been integrative and humanistic. Psychodynamic, Gestalt, CBT, Transactional Analysis and Trans-relational are some of the approaches that I use which are always tailored to your needs and based on your choices. My work is rooted in the humanistic, person centred approach of Carl Rogers, working with you with compassion, empathy and non-judgement.
• Are sessions confidential? I am committed to the high standards of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ to work with you safely and confidentially. There are a few rare exceptions to confidentiality that I am legally required to raise, for example, any reported acts of terrorism and we talk about this from the outset.
• How long do sessions last? Sessions last for 50 minutes.
• How long will I be in therapy? It is your choice about how long you remain in therapy. I offer longer-term therapy and shorter-term specific work therapy. For some benefits are felt immediately, for others the work carries on for months, or over a year.
• Do you work face-to-face, online and on the telephone? I work face-to-face, online and by telephone. I have had appropriate recognised training to work in all three areas.
• Do you visit people at home? I offer some local, limited home visits based on individual needs.
• Do you work with trainees? I offer some lower rates for trainee counsellors. I am in training as a supervisor and if counselling is being taken for required course requirements you will need to check with your individual college to see if this provision qualifies.
• How will therapy end? It is your choice about when therapy ends. As part of my practice we review regularly with the aim of having a planned ending to ensure that therapy finishes safely for you.
My first session
The first full session together differs to others and allows for us to talk about what brings you to counselling, to ask questions about what is involved and to explore what your hopes and goals are by attending sessions.
I will ask for some personal information during your first session (this will be gathered from a parent/carer if the client is a younger child). Details asked for include: name, address, emergency contact and GP details. It is your choice about whether you agree to share information, however, I am unable to provide counselling without this information, which may be needed in the case of an emergency. Data gathered will be kept securely.
We will also have time to talk through the best form of contact for you and I will direct you to the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ guidelines should you have any concerns.
If at the end of this session you feel that counselling is not for you, you are under no obligation to continue. If for any reason it is felt that your needs would be best met by another professional I may suggest someone, but the choice will be yours.
