About me and my therapy practice

鈥淲hen you go inwards with gentleness, even though the journey might be precarious, you will still in no way be going into isolation. Rather, you will be coming into deeper kinship with all that is鈥

John O鈥橠onohue (The Inner Landscape)

Looking for talking therapy can be daunting, whether you are considering it for the first time or perhaps seeking a new perspective, choosing the right counsellor for you is important.

Counselling and psychotherapy can offer the opportunity to illuminate, explore, process and potentially re-frame your experiences, thoughts and feelings. My work is collaborative, compassionate, person-centred and trauma responsive, and I can hold a space for you while you heal, grow or change.

The core principles of my approach are to:

  • Be present with acceptance and compassion whilst you explore the experiences, thought processes, feelings and parts of you that might not always be seen by others that could be impacting your relationships or capacity to fulfil your true potential.
  • Provide a safe space, a strong and robust therapeutic relationship and a place where you can find your own unique combination of healing, growth and change.
  • Allow you to lead and guide the focus of our work and unearth your own insights and solutions. Although my way of working is non-directive, I might gently support this process with the use of empathic questioning or honest perceptions but never without compassion and acceptance.
  • Work holistically to support you to find self-awareness, stillness of mind and a new connection with yourself.
  • Be trauma responsive at all times, by incorporating trust, safety, empowerment, choice and collaboration into our relationship, interactions and environment.

Practice description

I have over 20 years experience in holding space for individuals, families and groups in therapeutic and educational roles in the NHS, alongside work in community health projects and third sector organisations. I am trained in the Humanistic person centred approach which supports you to freely explore your whole life experience. I have experience of offering short- and long-term psychotherapeutic counselling to a diverse range of adults, specialist work with 18-25-year-olds, and as an initial assessment counsellor within Edinburgh counselling services.

My background and specialist training as a health professional working with parents in the perinatal period, early years, and with adolescents allows me to bring a deeper understanding of the complex issues that can arise for clients during these transitional times.

As a facilitator of trauma informed and responsive education for professionals as part of Scotland's national training programme, I bring knowledge, skills and core values from this work to my approach.

I work with anyone over 16 and offer either short or long term psychotherapeutic counselling. I have experience of working with a broad range of issues, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, addictions, loss and trauma.

Alongside offering person centred counselling and psychotherapy, I also work holistically either one to one or in closed groups integrating yoga and psychotherapy. This harnesses the power of the body and breath to find stillness in the mind, offers clients an opportunity to experience the benefits such as emotional regulation and self-awareness and optimises the benefits of talking therapy. I am a registered yoga teacher and have completed additional training in Trauma Informed Yoga.

My first session

I offer a free 30 minute face to face consultation or a 15-30 minute initial call so that you can get a sense of me, and to explore how we might best work together.

I can offer weekly or fortnightly sessions, and can work online in some circumstances. I work from two Edinburgh locations. I offer 50-minute sessions at 拢50 (拢60/60 mins Integrative Yoga Psychotherapy) and have a limited number of concessionary spaces available.
