About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I'm Robbie - I’m an Integrative Counsellor/Psychotherapist, which means that my practice draws on aspects of a number of different theoretical approaches, most notably Existential, Person Centred and Jungian Theory.
I’m heavily informed by existential thinking in that I tend to see the sorts of things that bring us to therapy as being quite existential issues (love, anxiety, death, freedom, responsibility, meaning, loneliness, loss). I think each of us encounters these issues in our own unique way depending on our personal histories, social contexts, worldviews, beliefs and values; and of course the particulars of what time and chance throws our way.
Counselling and Psychotherapy are not alone in engaging with these sorts of issues, so within existential thinking I’d be including Philosophy, Sociology, Literature, Psychology, Art and various other disciplines and arenas that have long concerned themselves with questions around how to find purpose; how we relate to ourselves, to others, to the world around us; how we make decisions; how we express ourselves; what it means to live authentically. Counselling and Psychotherapy can be a space to step into these sorts of questions in a personal way as they uniquely apply to us.
I also have a keen interest in aspects of Jungian Theory. In practice this shows up as a readiness to consider what sort of unconscious processes or beliefs might be influencing us, at times working with dreams, and an interest in how an integration of different aspects of ourselves might evolve towards a more balanced whole, which in turn provides us with the capacities needed to navigate terrain that might historically have had us stuck. I’m not a Jungian Analyst - this is just a personal interest that I mention in case it’s shared.
Previous to training as a therapist I worked in hospitality alongside working as a musician; I have an ongoing interest in the therapeutic value of creative expression. I'm also passionate about Philosophy.
Practice description
I think that having a dedicated space to reflect on how we're experiencing life in a candid and intentional way can engender new perspective, self-knowledge and change. I see a trustworthy therapeutic relationship as being an essential part of this and aim always to be a genuine, collaborative and human presence.
I think that when we’re given the room to speak and be heard without fear of judgement, and with a confidence that we will be met in a genuine and empathic way, we’re much more likely to begin to tap into our own inner resources and find our own answers and ways through; in this way I'm informed by aspects of Person Centred Theory.
