About me and my therapy practice

Hello. My name is Richard (he/him) and I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor.

People seek counselling and therapy for many reasons, some of which are clear and apparent, such as suffering with low self-esteem, anxiety, or the impact of infidelity in a relationship. Other reasons can be harder to define, a general feeling of emptiness, feeling lost, or a sense of drifting apart from a partner.

Whether you can identify the source of your discomfort or just have a nagging sense that something doesn’t feel quite right, I offer a safe, accepting, and confidential space to explore together what may be going on for you and support you in understanding, changing, or accepting.

I work in-person or online with adult individuals and couples. Sessions are weekly and last for 50 minutes.

My approach is grounded in my training in relational Transactional Analysis (TA) psychotherapy. This means I am interested in how our past shapes us and continues to do so, perhaps out of awareness, in the present. In addition, TA has a number of tools that can help make sense of painful patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

For more information about my approach please visit my website at https://www.richardgorman.co.uk

I am committed to ethical, non-discriminatory practice and welcome clients of all identities, sexualities, partnering relationships, cultures, and faiths. My approach is sensitive to the influence that society, culture, heritage and intergenerational factors have on people's lives and identities.

Before starting my private practice, I worked as a counsellor for two London based mental health charities and prior to this I spent over ten years as a listening volunteer for the Samaritans.

My first session

If you are thinking about working with me the first step would be to send me a message via text, email or using the form on this page.

We will then setup a brief 15-20 minute Zoom or phone call to discuss what brings you to therapy and practicalities such as available sessions times and preference for online or in-person work. This call is free of charge with no obligation to continue.

If you decide to continue we will setup an introductory session. This session is a chance to get to know each other, talk about what brings you to therapy in more detail and begin to shape the focus of our work. This introductory session is charged at a reduced rate of £50 and there is no obligation to continue.
