About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I am Jo. I often think of the way I work with clients as helping them to navigate a trail through a forest. At times, it may feel like the trees are closing in, the sunlight struggling to break through. I will walk with my clients, maybe holding a torch or a compass for them (not literally).
I believe that each of us knows our way through our own forest, but that at times we all need someone to help us - to walk alongside us, maybe tentatively suggesting different paths that might be explored together.
Ultimately, the map, the compass and the torch are the client’s, but I walk with each client until their path opens up, the light shines brighter onto it, and the client feels confident to move forward without me.
I have experience working with a diverse range of people, with a wide range of concerns that brought them to counselling.
I have a particular interest in working with people with neurodivergent conditions or traits. I know neurodivergent traits can lead to people feeling isolated, unheard and misunderstood. I am someone who was diagnosed with a neurodivergent condition in adulthood, so have first-hand experience of some of the challenges.
Practice description
I am an Integrative Humanistic Counsellor - I work with my clients in a non-directive, relational manner in order to help them navigate their emotions.
I believe clients are only likely to see the change they seek if they feel respected, secure and heard. I will tentatively ask questions, inviting clients to consider their emotional responses and perspectives, but I still work in a very client-led manner.
Choosing the right counsellor can feel a little overwhelming - there seem to be so many to choose from. I offer a free 15-minute online consultation so we can get a feel for if we might be able to work together. If you have any questions about me, or how I work please get in touch.
My first session
The first session I offer is a 15-minute video call. I do not charge for this session; it is simply a "are we a good fit for one another?" chat.
