About me and my therapy practice
I work in a Person-Centred approach, which means offering and holding a space of understanding, acceptance and authenticity, that is ultimately led by you.
It's an approach that I feel attuned to due to it’s philosophy, its attempts to address power and how it can facilitate people in their process and journey of change, whatever that may be. I am also interested the concept of masculinity and in the complex feelings of mixed heritage being born into a family with a background of different nationalities.
My background: My journey to become a counsellor came from feeling as if I had various aspects of my life that needed to change and ultimately a want to help others in a way that fit in with my ethos. That led me to learn about the person-centred approach, of which I trained in Norwich, UK. A city I have lived in for the majority of my life, although I have studied Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester and have also travelled to various places all over the world. Beyond that I am a Husband, Father, Son, Brother and Uncle.
My experience: As well as working privately, I have worked as a Youth Counsellor for MAP with young people from the ages of 14-25 as part of an NHS contract. I have experience working as a counsellor with a variety of people, organisations and charities such as Mind and The Norwich Centre, which included project work with university students. Alongside my counselling I have years of experience in support work with organisations such as Future Projects and the Samaritans. This has included group facilitation such as Men’s Groups.
My interests: I have a passion for movement and art forms, in particular I have been teaching Capoeira to adults and kids for years, exploring the complex heritage of this Brazilian art through movement, music and culture.
Practice description
I work online with individuals 18+ and am trained in the Person-Centred Approach (PCA) to Post-Graduate Diploma Level with the Norwich Centre, UK.
This is based on the principles of providing a safe environment of empathy and acceptance.
I will work alongside you to aid in self-reflection and to explore emotions and experiences rather than telling you what to do or think. My counselling is based on a relationship where we work together but you decide what we talk about and the direction of the therapy. It is an ongoing process that can be challenging but aims to lead to further self-acceptance and understanding.
My first session
Prior to our first session I will offer a free phone conversation to get an idea of why you are coming to counselling and send you some more information on how I work and my privacy notice. If you are interested in working together please email me at samtawn@proton.me and we can arrange a phone call.
In our first session together, we will aim to explore why you have come to counselling more fully, whether I will be suitable for you and how we might work together. There is no obligation to continue or to commit to a fixed number of sessions.
