About me and my therapy practice

My work with my clients is to help them process and understand their feelings about themselves, their behaviour, other people, or events they have experienced. Ultimately, to help them find a way to feel better. This may involve an acknowledgement and acceptance of who they are or what has happened to them, enabling them to develop a better relationship with themselves and a kinder voice that counters their inner critic. It may also involve strategies to more effectively manage presenting issues such as anxiety, overthinking or people pleasing.

You might be feeling anxious or depressed. You may be experiencing low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence. Maybe you have been through a difficult life event such as a relationship breakdown or a bereavement. You might be struggling to deal with longstanding issues that are affecting you, your family or your relationships. You may have experienced a trauma, for example a shocking or dangerous incident or an abusive or controlling relationship. You might just be feeling unhappy but are struggling to understand why.

Counselling can help. Having a safe space to talk about your experience and share your thoughts is therapeutic in its own right. Being supported to find your own answers can be both transformational and empowering; it can help you to feel better.

Practice description

I offer a non-judgmental and respectful safe space where you can discuss whatever is on your mind. This could be something you are struggling to deal with or something about yourself that you find difficult and would like to explore.

My core training is in person centred therapy but I also have some training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion focused therapy (CFT),  solution focussed brief therapy (SFBT) and counselling for domestic abuse.  These can be utilised as part of the therapy if they are helpful to you, for example, if you have a very specific issue or experience you would like to address or are just feeling generally stuck or lost in your situation.

As a person centred therapist my role is to listen to what's going on for you, understand your personal perspective and work with you to find a way forward. I won't give you advice or tell you what I would do in your situation; I want to hear and understand how things are from your perspective.

I work with general counselling clients who bring a variety of issues. I also work with specialist counselling services to support clients who have experienced abusive relationships. Some of this work involves shorter term interventions to address and better manage issues that clients struggle with day to day, for example anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or overthinking. I also work with longer term or open-ended counselling interventions to explore deeper issues or experiences. These issues may be historical, longstanding or traumatic but continue to affect clients and have an impact on their general wellbeing and quality of life. These deeper issues may also underpin some of the presenting issues that clients struggle with day to day.

In addition to this, I have a long history working in post 16 education as a lecturer and ran my own small business for over 25 years.

About me and my therapy practice

Training as a supervisor felt like a logical next step that allows me to utilise the skills I developed as an educator into my counselling practice. I am trained in the seven eyed model of supervision which provides a structure that focuses on:

The client

The interventions used

The relationship between the client and therapist

The therapists process

The supervisory relationship

The supervisors process

The wider context of the work

Practice description

The value of a shared experience and a different perspective is something I have personally appreciated and benefitted from throughout my training and work as a therapist. This includes supervision groups and one to one support with both peers and qualified supervisors. I consider supervision to be a working relationship that supports personal growth as well as professional development. I am interested in the human experience of our work as therapists as well as effective professional practice and upholding of standards, all of which I bring to my role as a supervisor.

As a therapist my core training is in person centred therapy and my supervisory style reflects this. I also have some training in other approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion focused therapy (CFT), solution focussed brief therapy (SFBT) and counselling for domestic abuse. I work with general counselling clients who bring a variety of issues. I also work with specialist counselling services to support clients who have experienced abusive relationships. Some of this work involves shorter term interventions to address and better manage issues that clients struggle with day to day.
