About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I am Dolores. Welcome to my profile and thank you for taking your time to read it.
There are times in our lives when despite our best efforts, we end up feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or lost with a personal or interpersonal problem. I can offer you a warm, supportive, safe, and confidential space to work together through those difficulties you want to overcome.
I am a collaborative, integrative and holistic counsellor. This means I will be there supporting you to achieve the changes you want. We will work together towards them. I also believe, in looking at all areas of your life, to see how the current problem affects them but also to find your own resources and strengths. I work with different therapeutic models, and I will use a different blend of them depending on the needs of each client. I also find body-mind connecting approaches very useful when working with anxiety and stress. Especially when the client struggles for words to talk about their experience.
I have 23 years of experience working with individuals with severe mental health illnesses, the last 14 years as an occupational therapy assistant. It gave me the opportunity to help people from diverse backgrounds, skills, cognitive and physical ability to do what they love doing. I learnt to connect with people in distress, to adapt tasks so they could be accomplished, to individualize the treatment so it is person-centred. This work has had a great impact on the therapist I am now.
I have a degree in Psychology and a master in Relationship Therapy. I was trained by Relate and after qualifying, I worked for them for another 5 months.
Practice description
You will decide what objectives/changes you want to achieve and together we will work towards them. We will be making regular reviews to keep track of our work together.
I believe our past and early experiences are very important in creating our sense of identity, our way to see the world around us and how we relate to others. We will discuss them during therapy, to see their impact in the current problem.
Non-discriminatory practice and respect for what makes us unique are key aspects of my practice. Therapy needs to be tailored to each individual client and to what matters to them.
My first session
I think it is important for you to choose the therapist that is right for you. The best way is through having a 15 minutes, no obligation, initial consultation. During this time, you can ask any question, and get to know me to help you to decide.
If you need time to think about it after this 15 minutes, that is fine too. You can let me know another day, if you decide to start counselling with me.
During the first session, I will go through the therapy agreement with you. It will take about 10 minutes. After this, we can go more into the detail of what brings you to therapy and what changes you want to achieve.
