About me and my therapy practice

Between Us Counselling gives you a safe, confidential space to reflect and explore your world, without judgement or being told what to do. Helping you take a ‘helicopter’ view of your life and your relationships, see yourself from a new perspective and so find a way forward.

You will always be the one who knows the most about you. So my approach is Person-Centred Therapy.

My aim is to 'help you to explore your own issues, feelings, beliefs, behaviour, and worldview, so you can become more self-aware and achieve greater independence.'

/about-therapy/types-of-therapy/person-centred-counselling/

With a fresh perspective, you'll find more choices become available.

The counselling relationship we build is very important to me and so one of my priorities is to help you feel at ease. I am very aware how difficult it is to speak to someone you have not met before and to then be expected to speak openly about very private matters and feelings. My aim is to be empathic, authentic and understand that you are doing the best you can in the situation you now find yourself in.

My website www.betweenuscounselling.com also gives you access to recent client reviews.

Practice description

Counselling sessions with me gives you an hour each week/fortnight that’s devoted to you - to talk openly to an impartial listener about whatever is on your mind. To be heard, understood and supported, in confidence and without fear of judgment.

Person-centred counselling works on the principle that you know yourself best, so you lead the counselling with whatever you feel is most important. My aim is to build your self-confidence and autonomy, by really listening, understanding and noticing reactions. As we build a safe counselling relationship I will reflect back what I notice and hear, so that together we can explore if there are other choices available to you.

I work on a individual basis with young people and adults aged 16+ years. I have experience of working with clients struggling with anxiety, stress, self-worth issues, relationship attachment problems, holding boundaries both at home and at work, loss, bereavement, trauma, emotional and physical abuse and also working with adults who have lived through adverse childhood experiences.

Boarding School Syndrome - As an ex-boarder myself, I have a particular interest in the effect that boarding school has had on some ex-pupils in adult life. I have received specialist training (led by Nick Duffell) in counselling former boarders who feel impacted by their school experience. I have written a chapter about how sibling relationships can be affected by attending boarding school. This is due to be published in the spring of 2025.

I carried out a research dissertation on the trauma and effects of boarding school. You can read the dissertation .

My first session

The relationship is everything, of course – so before booking counselling sessions, we’ll have a free 30-minute no-obligation telephone or Zoom meeting, so we can be sure we’re happy working together and that you’ll get what you want from it. We can discuss your needs and expectations of therapy and decide whether we’re a good fit.

If you are happy to go ahead, we can book sessions on a week by week basis or in a block, the choice is yours.

During the course of counselling, periodically we will review the progress together. If at any time (and for any reason), either of us feel that this way of working is not appropriate, we can look at approaching the therapy in another way. This is very much a working relationship.
