About me and my therapy practice

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist and supervisor with a background in counselling psychology and 20 years experience of working with adult clients in the NHS, the voluntary sector and in private practice.

I have also been involved with psychotherapy research and education, working as a lecturer in counselling psychology and psychotherapy at Roehampton University, the University of the West of England and the University of Warwick.

Practice description

What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy enables you to explore your current difficulties and also considers how these issues may be rooted in past experiences and relationships, particularly in childhood. The aim is to help you to make sense of your concerns in the here and now and to recognise and rework patterns of behaviour and ways of being that have developed over time and which may no longer be helpful for you.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy also enables you to attend to and acknowledge different aspects of yourself – some of which may be less conscious than others; to become more curious about your thoughts, feelings, motivations and memories and to get to know yourself better. This enhanced understanding enables you to live more authentically.

How long will it take?

This depends on the nature of the issues that you are facing. A current problem may only need a few months of weekly therapy. For enduring psychological difficulties longer-term work will often be more beneficial. We can consider together what might be best for you at assessment and review this as our work evolves.

My first session

An initial assessment meeting (or meetings) and discussion about what you are struggling with will enable us to consider if psychodynamic therapy is likely to help you, and if it feels right for you, or whether a different approach, or therapist, or setting might be more beneficial.

If we do decide to work together, weekly sessions take place at a mutually agreed time of the week. Sessions last for one hour and are face to face.

You are encouraged to talk about whatever is troubling you and we will attempt to explore the various factors that seem to be contributing to your difficulties.

Please contact me in the first instance, either by email or by phone, for a brief discussion about what you are facing and what support you feel you might need. We can then arrange an assessment time.
