About me and my therapy practice

I work in a child-centered way, following the PACE approach in creative therapy. PACE stands for Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy.

My approach to creative therapy includes storytelling, painting, drawing, sandplay, puppetry, bodywork, movement, etc. This gives children choice to express their thoughts and feelings in ways other than just verbally. Play in therapy allows for me to witness a story as it unfolds and gives a safe space to honour that process, where children can be understood. I believe that every child is unique and value them as individuals with their own mind, views and ways of seeing the world.

Practice description

I am committed as an individual and under Zarya Counselling to stand up for social justice issues. I stand in unity with Black Lives Matter and embed an anti-racist approach. I am a member of BAATN (Black, African & Asian Therapy Network).

From my work I see how diverse children, parents, and families can be. I support a variety of family structures that differ from the nuclear family. Enquiries are welcome from people of any gender and sexuality.

My first session

I’m a parent and I want to refer a child or adolescent for counselling:

Email me and we can arrange for a one to one Consultation. This gives us an opportunity to discuss your worries from your perspective. I will ask questions to gather information to see what may be useful to support your child. Together we can decide how to move forward.

If we agree to do so, I will I book your child into an Initial Assessment with me, which will last 50 minutes. For younger children, or those anxious about coming, we can shorten it to 30 minutes. During the Initial Assessment, I will explore with your child what the problems might be and whether to work with me.

Following the Initial Assessment, if we are all in agreement, we will arrange a regular session time, each week, where I will meet with your child.

I'm a young person and I want to refer myself for counselling:

If you are over 18 then you may self-refer by emailing me.

If you are under 16, depending on your circumstances we may have to seek parental consent or consent from whoever is your legal guardian.

If you are under 16 I would recommend that you speak with your parent/guardian(s) about wanting to explore counselling and if they agree, I am happy to hold a Consultation with you.

Depending on your age and ability to provide consent for therapy, it may be appropriate to begin therapy without the parent/carer. This will be discussed during our Consultation and addressed on a case-by-case basis.
