About me and my therapy practice
Life can be hard sometimes and struggling with things alone is the loneliest place. Counselling offers you the space to say things that you can’t to anyone else, and know that you won’t be judged.
My name is Emma and I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist(CBT). When you sit with with me in the therapeutic space, my attention is fully and exclusively for you. This is something that we rarely experience, and is why people often struggle with feelings of not being heard or seen. I create the space for you to talk and explore your feelings; what may be going on underneath the feelings and how your life experiences have shaped you. Often we carry distorted messages about ourselves from our past, and the skill of the counsellor is in bringing these into awareness and helping you to discover what is holding you back from being the person you want to be.
My main focus for therapy, is to enable you to find a way through whatever is troubling you, so that life is more manageable, the future more hopeful and maybe even your dreams become possible!
People come to therapy for many and varied reasons from a life changing situation or illness, stress at work or relationship struggles and more. But I also hear people who have struggled with their feelings wonder if their problems are 'worth bothering a therapist with'. Please know that whatever you are trying to cope with, talking to someone can make a difference.
Practice description
My private practise is based in Westerton a suburb of Bearsden. I'm in immediate walking distance of the train station and there is parking outside the building.
My office is a warm and welcoming safe space offering you confidentiality to talk about your presenting issues.
CBT is evidenced as being an effective therapy for treating anxiety, depression, phobias and many other presenting issues. I offer a therapy journey rather than time limited. This is because I believe therapy is a process that can't be rushed and I will deliver sessions at your pace. I do regularly review this so The number of sessions can be extended or reduced as necessary.
My first session
I am aware that picking up the phone or sending that first email or text may feel daunting, and I will try and make this as comfortable as possible. Once you have got in touch, we will arrange a suitable time have a telephone conversation before we start sessions, to get an idea of what you are looking for from therapy and answer any questions you may have.
The most important thing is that you are comfortable with myself and talking to me before we start session is part of that process
There is a little paperwork at the first session, but I aim to keep this as simple as possible, so that I can spend some time listening to you and understanding what has brought you to therapy. Sometimes it's not always easy to say in the first session, what you want from counselling, and that's ok. It may take a couple of sessions for you to settle into the work and begin to see the way ahead.
