About me and my therapy practice
Has something awful happened to you or somebody else and if feels as if you’re reliving it all of the time? However much you try to avoid the emotional or physical harm you experienced, or you witnessed, it’s like you can’t escape the distressing images, physical pain or overwhelming feelings that haunt you.
Perhaps you find that you’re constantly on edge, waiting for something bad to happen to you or somebody else, or are prone to angry outbursts. Negative thoughts might prevent you from sleeping or nightmares wake you up in the night. You might feel all of the place and have difficulty concentrating. However hard you try, you can’t forget what happened to you or somebody else.
How Therapy Can Help
Psychotherapy can be highly effective in managing and reducing unwanted images, physical pain, and intrusive thoughts, allowing you to regain control of your life and a sense of safety.
Often, they stem from unresolved trauma or deeply emotional experiences. Psychotherapy provides a safe space to process them, gradually reducing their emotional intensity and impact. In some cases, unwanted memories, body sensations and thoughts may also be linked to unresolved emotions or internal conflicts. Therapy can help you explore these deeper issues, bringing clarity and resolution so that the memories no longer carry the same emotional weight.
Incorporating EMDR Into Our Work
In addition to traditional therapeutic approaches, I use Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), a powerful technique shown to help reprocess traumatic memories, making them less distressing over time. By addressing the root causes, EMDR helps reduce the frequency and intensity of unwanted images, thoughts and sensations, allowing you to move forward. We can discuss incorporating EMDR into our work together, if it’s appropriate for your needs.
Practice description
I offer face-to-face sessions in a lovely room in Gosforth.
Therapeutic Approach
As a qualified psychotherapist, my approach is rooted in understanding the underlying causes of your emotional distress. I believe in building a trusting, collaborative relationship where you feel comfortable being yourself and sharing openly. Rather than offering quick fixes, I aim to work with you over time to address the core issues driving your pain, whether that’s trauma, shame, or unresolved emotional conflict.
I typically work with clients on a weekly basis. Regular sessions create a predictable routine, providing a sense of security and maintaining ongoing momentum in addressing issues. This consistency makes it easier to build on the progress made in previous sessions and ensures you have the necessary emotional support as we delve deeper into the work.
I also love working creatively to help you express things that can be difficult to articulate or to bring awareness to the sources of your distress. We may use drawing, imagery, guided visualisations, dreamwork, or simply talk. Together, we will decide on an approach that feels comfortable for you.
I will work with you at your pace, ensuring that our sessions are tailored to your needs and comfort.
