About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Richard, and I would like to welcome you to my profile. As an online and telephone psychodynamic counsellor I offer convenient, accessible sessions across the UK, and can provide you with a confidential, welcoming, and non-judgemental space to talk about whatever you find is troubling you.

Psychodynamic counselling focuses on events which have afflicted us in the past that, while we might not be fully aware of them, continue to trouble us in the present. As a result, we can find ourselves repeating and reliving unwanted patterns, or feeling almost trapped in situations which we find difficult to resolve. There may not be any immediately identifiable problems at all, yet deep-seated issues can leave us feeling that something just isn't right.

The therapeutic relationship aims to bring awareness of the unconscious mind in a manageable way so that problems may be worked through carefully. And I believe that the way that we work together is an important part of effective therapy. Through a compassionate approach I can help you to explore issues at your own pace. As we do so, we look to give you a greater understanding and integration of your self, along with the feeling of being able to identify and express what is meaningful to you.

I am experienced in working with people living with stress, depression, anxiety, and feelings of being angry, upset, stuck, or confused. My practice as a trained psychodynamic counsellor is supported by my background working across a diverse range of mental health and caring environments, and I have a particular interest in making my practice autism friendly.

I am a registered member of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ, with my practice underpinned by professional ethics, ongoing supervision, and continual professional development. I also hold clean, enhanced DBS certification for working with children and adults and am subscribed to the DBS Update Service.

Practice description

I work to the practice of weekly 50-minute sessions, held on the same day and at the same time each week. I believe that the reliability and consistency that comes with having regular sessions in this way is an important part of the therapeutic process.

There is no set number of counselling sessions, instead they take the form of an ongoing arrangement. While psychodynamic counselling is open-ended and can often span a year or more, short terms of six months or less are also effective.

The fee for each counselling session is £50, whilst I also hold a limited number of concessionary spaces for those on low incomes where the fee for each counselling session is £30.

And you can be at home, in the office, on a lunch break, at college, walking, in the car (parked!) - just as long as it's safe and confidential, we can do our best to find a way to make sure your sessions happen.

My first session

Our first meeting will be an initial consultation, which is a combined assessment and 'getting-to-know-you' session. It will be used to discuss why you are looking for therapy now and what you might like to talk about, along with some more basic information.

Whilst it is quite a structured session, it is a space for you to talk freely and ask any questions that you may have.

It will also give us the opportunity to see how we might work together. It is important that your needs are being met when you are engaging in therapy, and finding the right therapist for you is essential for that.

The fee for a 50 minute initial consultation is £25, with there being no obligation to take up further sessions. If we feel that we have a good therapeutic ‘fit’ and you would like to arrange ongoing sessions, we can do so on the day; however, you may feel that you need to take more time to think it over, and it is important that you feel comfortable with your decision.

I hope that this overview provides enough guidance to help you make an informed choice, but if you find you have any questions that you would like to ask please do get in contact and I will be happy to help.
