About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Emma. Whether you have had counselling before, or this is your first time seeking support, this is a positive step towards getting the relief and insight you are looking for. I can offer you an often much-needed, ‘sounding board’ and a safe place that is without expectation or judgment.
As a qualified and experienced Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I have the training and experience to listen with empathy; both attentively and effectively. It will be your space to explore and begin to take the steps to feel more yourself.
I have experience in counselling depression, anxiety, trauma & bereavement. Our therapeutic relationship will allow you to safely and gently look at conflicting and challenging parts of your life. I welcome you initially, to a free, no-obligation fifteen minute’s phone consultation to discuss any questions and get a sense of how we may work together.
Practice description
I can provide a space where you can explore what it is that might be holding you back and causing your low mood, restlessness or lack of motivation. Whether it's about exploring a specific time of your life where you experienced something difficult or just that you don't feel quite 'yourself', talking with a counsellor can offer you a vital outlet to start to feel back in control of your life.
I have a particular interest in identity and what shapes and defines it. I believe many of us may lose our sense of self at one or more stages in our life. This is often simply due to everyday life events; such as having children, marriage, separation or divorce or the grief experienced through the death of a loved one.
These challenging and disorientating changes can erode your confidence and leave you feeling out of touch with who you thought you were. Once we begin to lose that 'core' self, we are less able to calmly respond and cope using our usual strategies. We may feel vulnerable, confused and exhausted.
Much of my experience includes working with trauma, depression, anxiety, identity, grief and loss and low self-esteem. I offer and I am experienced in effective online and phone therapy which can work as a convenient and flexible alternative to face-face sessions. .
My first session
After our phone consultation, I will have more of a sense of what has brought you to counselling. From there, we will have our initial session where, within a safe and confidential space, you can begin to tell me your story. Through this gentle process, where you set the pace and tone, we will work together to identify what is causing your discomfort and distress.
We will consider new ways of coping; replacing older ones that may no longer be suitable or appropriate. I believe in, 'joining the dots' and looking at cycles and patterns of behaviour which often mean we may have become stuck in a way of being. You may find yourself speaking about your family or your childhood and any significant life-events with me. As we build your picture and understand more about your identity, you will likely experience a deepening sense of self and with that, a feeling of strength and empowerment.

Practice description
Training, qualifications & experience:
My training is seated within the Humanistic approach to counselling. This recognises the importance of an individual’s potential and their ability to experience growth. Within this, I am trained in and guided by Transactional Analysis. TA may enable a more structured way of working and can be very useful to the client when understanding their own relationship rhythms and historic, sometimes outdated, behaviours.
I am guided by the strength and potential of the relationship between therapist and client. By working honestly and openly together, it is possible to achieve longed for change and soothe everyday tensions and worries. I have counselled clients experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, bereavement and loss, relationship conflict, domestic abuse and low self esteem.
I run my own private practice from a convenient location in the South-East where I keep office hours for face-to-face work. I offer and I am experienced in Zoom/Skype and phone therapy.
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapist (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ) and adhere to their ethical framework. The framework may be accessed at www.bacp.co.uk.
I undergo regular clinical supervision and I hold full Professional Liability insurance with Towergate Insurance and a current, enhanced DBS certificate.

My first session
Our first session will be based on getting to know one another. After our free phone consultation, I will have a clearer sense of why you have contacted me and what your needs are. In our first session, we will go a little further by working together on your assessment which helps me gain a deeper understanding of who you are.
We will look at your history and any important events which may have shaped who you are and how you may feel.
