About me and my therapy practice

Having spent the majority of my adult life working in the social care sector, I have found that counselling and psychotherapy are really where I feel I belong.

Making the first step towards contacting a counsellor can be daunting and incredibly brave.

It’s very important to find a counsellor who you click with. So, I’m happy to have a chat over the phone prior to making a first appointment.

Counselling can help you make sense of things. It is an opportunity to look at patterns in your life and how you respond to things. Being very passionate about my work, I truly believe that talking therapies can have a profound effect on a person’s ability to heal, develop and move forward.

I also work in a person centred, creative way, using images, objects, sandtrays and more, but this is a completely optional way of working.

I am now facilitating peer support groups for Creative/expressive practitioners based in Scotland and developing training around this.

I have worked with issues such as ADHD, bereavement, trauma, grief, body image issues, depression and anxiety, gender issues, PTSD, physical and sexual abuse, adverse childhood experiences, family estrangement, chronic ill health, domestic violence, loss of a child, miscarriage, abortion, suicidal thoughts, people affected by suicide, low self-esteem and self harm.

Locally I have developed some community group work around creativity and art.

My office is located in the city centre. Online Webchat (zoom) sessions are available. I also offer outdoor (AKA walk and Talk) Sessions and Group work.

I am a HAES  and LGBTQIA+ friendly Counsellor.

Please have a look at my website for further details.

Practice description

I offer a warm and informal way of working.  I have mentioned earlier that I am very interested in working in a creative or expressive way. I personally have found that approach extremely powerful and effective as a means to finding a language for expression as, frankly, sometimes finding words can be hard. Having an alternative way of exploring and looking at issues can be complementary to talking therapies.

I have done various trainings in working this way, to practitioner level with both APCCA (Association for Person Centred use of Creative Arts - based on the work of Liesl Silverstone), and with Creative Connections, Cumbria ( which was developed by Natalie Rogers, Dinah Brown and Pete Saunders) and I have completed the Creative Counsellors Community's 8 module pathway training. But for all this is a large part of my practice it is entirely optional, I only offer this, I don't expect nor insist on it.

My special interests are working with Neurodivergent clients, ADHD specifically, whether it be diagnosed or self identified. I am ADHD/ND myself and have a particular insight into living with this and also experience of going through the assessment process.

This is also a focus of a lot of my continuous professional learning.I aim for my practice to be Neuro-affirming - which means that I have a good understanding of Neurodivergence and would work to meet my clients where they are. Amongst other things, I can adapt my office where possible to avoid sensory discomfort, I encourage clients who need to move around to do so, and offer things like 'fidgets' etc.

My first session

First contact would be via email - As I don't answer calls from unfamiliar numbers.

I normally offer a free, initial phonecall. This way we can both see if we are a good fit. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about how I work.

I ask all clients to complete a Client agreement - which I can explain during the initial phone chat and I'll go through again during our first session.
