I currently work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am until 6pm, and often have spaces at different times on both days. My remote sessions are done on Google Meets, and I email out a link for each session shortly before the agreed time.
Remote sessions can also be done on phone if that is preferable.
About me and my therapy practice
When I describe myself as ‘Person-Centred’ I mean that the aim, more than anything, is to offer you a space to explore anything you want about yourself, without judgment, in a space of empathy and genuineness. You are in control of what you want to talk about, and how deeply you want to go into it. Rather than specific strategies or advice, my aim is be alongside you as closely as I can, wherever it is that you want to go and what you want to explore. I won’t tell you what to do or suggest what you ‘should’ be feeling, because I believe that you are the expert on yourself and you are the best person to navigate your own life - what I aim to do though is work with you collaboratively to help you get into a place which is more in line with where you want to be.
What I will do in the session though is attempt, as best I can, to understand exactly what it is like to be you in the present moment, and to communicate that understanding as genuinely as I can with you. The sense of safety and understanding that I hope we can develop from this is the starting point from which we can work collaboratively to use the space as you see fit. Some people come with clear mental health goals in mind and want to talk about specific things about themselves, while others want to use the space to explore broader personal questions about their life and who they are. Others still have no particular plans for what to do in the space, but nevertheless feel that they get something out of it. All are fine - it is your space to do what you want with.
Some people come for a long time, while some people come for only a handful of sessions; I’ve had some people come for one session and feel that was enough, while others come for a handful of weekly sessions every now and then. As well as how you use the space, you are also in control of how long you want to come for.
Practice description
I also offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) Therapy. This is more structured than person-centred and more focused on helping you process specific distressing memories and experiences so that they no longer impact you in the same way. You still get to explore what you want to explore, although we will usually spend some time at the beginning deciding which experiences you want to process.
We can also mix both of these approaches – so we can have some sessions that are person-centred, and then have some sessions of EMDR if there is a particular memory or experience that you want to process.
Person Centred is usually offered for 50 minutes, and EMDR is best suited to 90 minutes. I offer sessions at both lengths, so you can choose what is best for you.
I charge £50 for 50 minute sessions, and £90 for 90 minute sessions. Cheaper slots are available for people who might struggle with this, so get in touch and we can talk about it. Equally if you can afford it, I also offer a 'pay it forward' option if anyone wishes to pay above my normal prices. This would enable me to offer more sessions to others at a lower rate.
I have been practicing for many years and have supported people with a wide variety of issues. I have experience working with adults, young people (12-18) and children, and have an additional qualification specifically in counselling children.
Alongside counselling itself, I have previously spent time managing a therapeutic service in a primary school, and for 4 years I taught on the Level 4 Counselling Diploma, training people to become qualified counsellors. I currently work as a Crisis Specialist Worker, alongside working in private practice.
Other areas I can work with:
BDSM and Polyamory - I regard myself as poly-aware and kink-aware, so am comfortable working with people from either/both communities, and also people just wanting to explore any feelings about kink or polyamorous relationships in a safe and accepting environment.
My first session
I offer people a free 30 minute 'consultation session' - essentially a chat where you can explain what's going on for you, what you want out of therapy, and for me to explain a little more about how I work and what I can offer.
Research has suggested that one of the most significant factors in having a positive experience of therapy is the client feeling comfortable with their therapist. With that in mind, I am happy to offer this before any paid sessions for free and without obligation.
