About me and my therapy practice
Helping you to live a better life.
Are you living life on your terms or do you always put others' needs before your own? Do you lack confidence to achieve your true potential? Do you suffer from low self-esteem?
Or perhaps, you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, anxious or unable to cope? Perhaps you are facing a particular problem? Or you simply feel that you have lost your way in life or taken the wrong path? Do you want to feel happier and more fulfilled?
As a psychotherapist and counsellor, I help people to work through whatever difficulties they face using ‘talking therapy’, in a secure and confidential setting. This may take the form of:
- short-term counselling to help people in distress facing a particular issue; often something that has happened recently, such as relationship breakdown, bereavement, redundancy, etc
- longer term psychotherapy to help people overcome more deep-rooted problems that may have troubled them for some time.
- personal development work; helping people to increase self awareness and emotional intelligence and become more effective in work, relationships and life in general.
Practice description
My approach is contemporary and realistic. You are in control at all times and we work at your pace. We will talk about whatever is troubling you and I will listen, without judgement, and offer insights to help you, based on my knowledge and experience. In this way we can help you to understand yourself much better and then you can make changes if you want to.
As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I work with the unseen forces that influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. We are usually unaware of these forces because they operate beyond our conscious awareness. They are usually established in our early life experiences and it is for this reason that this approach is often thought of as 'reflective therapy'.
Research has shown that working in this way often leads to more definite and longer lasting change with a lower likelihood of relapse. It is for this reason that psychodynamic therapy is often recommended as an effective treatment for a range of emotional and psychological problems.
I have a broad awareness of many other counselling models and techniques and I will use whatever I think is best for you at that time . Often, just having someone impartial to talk to in confidence, who is able to listen to you with respect, empathy and insight is enough to help you to begin feeling better.
My first session
Please contact me for a brief, informal telephone call.
Then, I offer an initial consultation to enable me to understand what has brought you to therapy and for me to think about the best way to help you. This also gives us a chance to meet face to face, discuss any concerns or questions that you may have and see how we feel about working together.
This may be in the form of an extended (90 mins) session or two standard (50 mins) sessions. If we are both happy to continue, we will agree arrangements for ongoing sessions.
