About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I am Catherine and thank you for your time.
As a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapist, I can help you unlock yourself, discover the meaning for you behind your symptoms and focus on change in the relationship with yourself and your relationship with others . This would be reflected and negotiated in the relationship between you and me.
Perhaps you have taken this tentative step (clicking on this page) because you are looking for something? Maybe things in your life are not adding up and it is very difficult to resolve things on your own? This unease can be because you are wondering if the life you are living is the one for you. Maybe it is: you have found the right track and it just needs tweaking. Or maybe not and this question is too overwhelming? Are you the ‘captain of your ship?’ or serving as a midshipman on someone else's?
Perhaps you have reached a crossroad in your life or you have come crashing against the (painful) truth and it can no longer be avoided? We would gently explore this and the things that may be stopping you: your fears and inhibitions.
You may be having to deal with a number of ‘symptoms’:
• Addictions.
• Anxiety and panic attacks.
• Bereavement.
• Chronic illness.
• Depression and low moods.
• Disassociation from self.
• A financial change: money does not lie.
• Job loss, unemployment.
• Loss of self. Low self-esteem.
• Disturbed sleep.
• Eating disorders.
• Suicidal ideation.
• The loss of someone to suicide.
• Divorce and separation.
• Rage: murderous and otherwise.
• Relationships.
• Boundaries and knowing your own boundaries.
• Gender: defining/understanding yourself.
• Borderline presentation.
• Narcissistic presentation.
These effects can be the starting point of therapy and may lead you to discover the underlying cause.
Practice description
I work with individual clients face-to-face or make use of the couch where client and therapist are facing away from each other and the client is free to 'free-associate' that is saying whatever comes to mind without censorship in order to discover what is going on.
My Approach:
Just to say: Therapy does not work miracles and does not provide you with a magic pill. As your therapist, I will act like a life compass. Here to help you keep focused and aligned with what is important to you. Here to help you recognise when you have drifted away from your purpose and steer you towards what brings you joy. Together we will head away from the rocks, when you are ready, and towards the open Sea, towards your true self. I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and work with the following: the Unconscious, Dreams, Transferences and the relationship in the room (between you and me) and how it is a mirror reflecting all the relationships outside of the room. The sessions can start face-to-face but as the work gets deeper, moving towards the couch which is often preferable as it gives you the freedom to face away from the therapist and truly be yourself as you are facing beyond the couch into the yonder of your own mind. You are building the relationship with yourself and no longer feeling so alienated/isolated.
This will be a quiet space for you to share something of yourself, or try to unpick the feelings of being overwhelmed and being misunderstood. I offer a safe place where you will experience what it is like to be listened to, perhaps for the very first time, and to be fully understood. Therapy is where the boundaries are set and clear: sessions are time limited, confidential, predictable (same time every week) the location is unchanging, the fees are structured.
I look forward to embarking on this journey of self-discovery with you.
My first session
The first (Initial Assessment) session runs for 90 minutes and will cover a discussion on your reasons behind coming to therapy and your presenting issues: what do you feel is hampering your full development or reaching your full potential? I will be asking you a number of questions about yourself, and how you cope. We may also chat about goals for therapy, expectations etc. It will enable you to get a feel for what therapy involves and what to expect and how it will help. Dates, times, fees, expectations can also be discussed.
