About me and my therapy practice

I am a chartered counselling psychologist and integrative psychotherapist based in the UK,  offering online counselling psychology, psychotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). I have worked as a counsellor and psychological therapist for various charitable organisations and the NHS. Since 2015 I have been working as a private therapist seeing clients on a face to face basis. In 2020, I completed ACTO approved training in online counselling, and moved my private practice online.

I take an integrative approach in my practice considering the needs of each of my clients, as unique human beings in the process of growing and developing. I hold that as humans we are shaped by our relationships (both past and present) and that it is through the therapeutic relationship that healing and change can occur.

In practice I thus seek to create and maintain a therapeutic relationship with each of my clients through non-judgemental inquiry, sensitive attunement, and authentic involvement.

Key influences on my approach and clinical practice include Kohut (self psychology), Bowlby (attachment theory), Kahn (psychodynamic), and Rogers (person-centred). I am also trained in CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) interventions, which I occasionally draw upon, if desired by the client.

Practice description

I offer online therapy services in the form of ‘live’ webcam sessions or therapy emails.

Similar to traditional face-to-face therapy, a live webcam permits both the client and therapist to see and hear each other at the same time, whilst providing the additional benefit of easier more convenient access (provided both parties have access to a webcam). Verbal and non-verbal cues can be picked up on which can also assist with the therapeutic process.

With therapy emailing you can take your time with what you want to say and write at a time which feels more therapeutically beneficial for you - either when things are especially difficult, or when your mind feels clear and you feel more able to articulate what you want to say. Or perhaps when you have some private time and space during your day or evening.

Painful thoughts and feelings can often get stuck in the mind. Some people find expressing themselves through writing easier than talking to someone face-to-face. Expressing yourself through writing can in itself be extremely cathartic and often a sense of relief is experienced on composing an email, and then again on completing and sending it to your therapist. Getting a response from your therapist that offers validation, acceptance, and understanding of your thoughts and feelings can be powerful. Exploration and the facilitation of insight in a non-judgemental approach can also encourage self-reflection, clarity and self-compassion.

Further details on how I offer online therapy can be found on my website (www.i-to-ionlinetherapy.com).

My first session

Engaging in therapy can be nerve racking particularly if this is your first time. You may be anxious talking about the difficulties you are experiencing, fear my reaction, or not know where to start. You may worry that you don’t know ‘how to do therapy’ or ‘how it will work’.

In our first session I will seek to gently explore what problems you are experiencing, what you hope to achieve via therapy, and answer any questions you might have with regard to how we will work together. You will get a sense of how I approach therapy, in a non-judgemental, professional and confidential manner; and I hope feel more relaxed as the session continues.

Prior to the first session you will also be invited to have a free 30 minute phone call where we can talk about the help you are seeking, and I will send you a few forms by email that you can fill out relating to practical details, and to ensure your safety. Further information about my practice including data protection can be found on my website (www.i-to-ionlinetherapy.com).

About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced psychotherapist and chartered counselling psychologist, delivering integrative therapy for adults facing various challenges; through charities, the NHS, and private practice, since 2009. Having undertaken the British Psychological Society’s training in Supervision Skills I now provide clinical supervision online for counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists.

My aim for supervision is to support you in your therapeutic work and facilitate your growth as a therapist, in a non-judgemental and safe environment.

Using the seven-eyed model (Hawkins and Shohet), we will explore your work from the perspective of:

* The client and their presentation

* The strategies and interventions used in therapy

* The therapeutic relationship

* The impact of the work on you, the therapist, and your capacity to engage with the client

* The supervisory relationship

* The here-and-now experience of the supervision session

* The wider context in which the therapy takes place, including the ethical codes of our professional organisations.

Although supervision is a mandatory requirement of our professional organisations, I hope you come to value it as a fascinating and exciting space to explore your work, learn and grow as a therapist, whilst feeling supported and motivated in this interesting, yet challenging line of work

My first session

As a practicing therapist I understand how important it is for you to find a supervisor who you can trust; feel comfortable in bringing your work to; and who provides a warm, friendly and professional learning environment that can support your development.

I therefore offer a 30 minute free phone call, where we can discuss your supervision needs and where you are in your career development; and enable you to get a sense of how we might work together.

I will then tailor our future sessions to suit your needs.

Types of therapy
