About me and my therapy practice
I am experienced in working with depression, anxiety, relationship issues & abuse. I will provide you with a space where we can discuss and look at issues at your own pace. Together we can explore and consider the difficulties that you are facing and understand why you feel the way you do, and what lies behind the problems you are experiencing. The aim is to help you find ways of dealing with issues that you are facing; providing an opportunity for you to work towards living in a more satisfying way where you feel more able to cope with life’s challenges.
Life can often be confusing, distressing and at times overwhelming. It can create anxiety, anger and unhappiness. You may be feeling stuck or as if problems are insurmountable. There are times in all our lives when we experience distressing events or feelings which seem overwhelming. Sometimes we have no idea what is making us feel the way we do. All we know is that life has become distressing, or even intolerable. It could be at these times a talking therapy may be a helpful option.
I understand the thought of meeting with a therapist can be daunting but many of us feel the need for additional support at some point in their lives. Talking through concerns with a trained professional can help you to understand yourself better and enable you to feel more able to make confident decisive choices about your life.
Currently I am providing counselling online using Zoom and Skype, which I will reviewed as government guidelines change.
Practice description
Within the privacy of the sessions, it becomes possible to identify those patterns of behaviour which we keep repeating causing difficulties in our lives, As we become aware of these unhelpful destructive patterns, and address the feelings they stir up, we can begin to see a shift in our perspective. With this clarity and understanding you will have more choices about what to do next and develop the confidence to manage your life more effectively and it becomes possible make lasting changes in our lives. My role will be to support you to gain insight into your past and how it has had a significant influence your life today. During the sessions, ideas, thoughts, and feelings can be aired in a non-judgmental and confidential setting. This allows unconscious thoughts, feelings and memories to surface and be worked through. The process of counselling or psychotherapy leads us to a deeper understanding of our feelings, thoughts and behaviour and how we relate to others. Self-awareness and self-acceptance foster improved and expanded life choices, thereby improving emotional well-being and functioning in life. I will support you to understand yourself and to find the life-path and choices that work best for you.
I am a psychodynamically trained practitioner. Psychodynamic therapy is a therapeutic process which helps us understand and resolve problems by increasing awareness of our inner world and its influence over relationships both past and present. It differs from most other therapies in aiming for deep seated change in personality and emotional development.
My first session
In order to book a first appointment, I ask that we first have a brief chat over the phone, so that you can say a little about what has led you to seek therapy at this point, and also to cover a couple of administrative issues and arrange a convenient time to meet.
In the first appointment, you will have the opportunity to talk about yourself and what has brought you to counselling. I will also ask you some specific questions about yourself, such as information about your general health and well-being, and background information about you. This will help me to understand you in the context of your life. The purpose of this first session is for us to begin to get to know each other, and to assess whether we believe we can work together in a way that will be useful to you. During this session, we will try to get a sense of the problem and jointly explore a possible way forward. It’s also an opportunity for us to consider what you may wish to achieve from counselling and to ask me any further questions you may have. If we decide to work together, we will arrange a time and day to meet and talk about our contract, how we will review our work and the cost of the sessions.
This first appointment lasts about an hour and a half. I can offer time-limited contracts (an agreed number of sessions, usually between 4-15) and open-ended contracts (where the sessions are available until such time as you feel ready to end), according to your needs.
