How many sessions will you want?

Psychotherapy can be short or long term. The number of sessions will depend on the depth and complexity of the issues you want to resolve and, also, how long you want to be in therapy for. Some clients see great results from less than six sessions whereas others will feel the need to work through issues for more than a year.

Sessions for both individuals and couples usually begin weekly and meeting weekly continues until the bulk of the work is done when we might move to fortnightly and then finish or tail off gradually.

I implement regular reviews to ensure that clients are happy with the therapy as it proceeds.

My credentials

I have a 1st class BA in Rogerian person-centred counselling and psychotherapy from the University of Warwick. I also have an MSc in psychology with Distinction and a PhD in psychological, social and behavioural sciences. I am a qualified supervisor, former university teacher, certified retreat leader and intimacy coach.

The use of the title Dr in this directory listing relates to the member’s doctorate qualification. However, this does not imply a general medical qualification.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an integrative and relational counsellor and psychotherapist working with individuals and couples. My practice is trauma-informed from vast experience in a wide range of public and private services; when talking isn't enough, I incorporate somatic practices into my work, which can help you get out of your head and into your body.

How can psychotherapy benefit you?

I offer a safe environment in which you can:

- express your thoughts and feelings

- gain a deeper insight into the issues you face.

It is my aim to help you find better ways to manage, or bring about changes in the way you think, feel and behave to improve your emotional wellbeing.

Psychotherapy sessions are confidential. This means that you can talk about things you might not feel able to discuss with anyone else.

Psychotherapy

My approach to psychotherapy is grounded in the person-centred approach (PCA), which is situated within the school of humanistic psychology. In the PCA, the emphasis is on the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and the client, so it is a relational type of therapy.

Intimacy Coaching

In 2020, I trained with Tantric Institute of Integrated Sexuality as a sex, love and relationship coach, which has led to a more somatic and spiritual way of working.

Imago Relationship Therapy

In 2023, I undertook training in Imago Relationship Therapy, which provides couples with a dialogic tool for improved communication. Although I have practised Imago for many years, my recent commitment to becoming certified means that I am once again a trainee. Recent trainings always bring many benefits to clients.

I am a former higher education teacher at undergraduate and postgraduate level, teaching for a number of years in different universities. I mainly taught on humanistic and person-centred counselling degrees, and also taught Egan's Skilled Helper model. My teaching years mean that I have a breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding of a range of models and theories.

Practice description

As a social psychologist, I understand the multiple factors - both external and internal – that might be contributing to your issues. We are all conditioned by our environments: familial, social, work and cultural. In the main, my approach is antithetical to the medical model because I understand people’s problems more in terms of what has happened to them or been done to them, rather than a problem with them as individuals. I help clients explore their experiences and make connections between past experiences and who they are today.

Every case is different, but sessions are always collaborative and based on an individual’s or couple's needs. I am always guided by my clients' needs as to the direction and pace that we go. I use all of my skills and knowledge to help people in the changes they want to make and am dedicated to supporting my clients throughout the therapy process.

Together, we'll decide what we will work on and how - depending on where you are on your journey and what you hope to achieve. You can feel confident that we will work out a plan that works for you and we'll be mindful of your progress and our process together, to ensure that you are happy with the service that you are investing in.

I have worked in many private and public services such as a childhood sexual abuse support service and a variety of prisons and addiction services. I am a trauma-informed therapist by experience. I am used to working with many models that bring about real and impactful change in people’s lives, so work integratively with a pragmatic approach. E.g., inner child work is both a powerful and empowering method of developing self-acceptance, and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs helps us to understand how we need to build firm foundations in the basics of life before the attainment of loftier goals.

My first session

You are welcome to contact me by phone or email and I can then book you in for a complimentary introductory call via Zoom or on the phone. When we meet, you can tell me about what it is that you are seeking help with and I can tell you something about how we might work together. I don't use formal assessment and diagnosis as my approach is somewhat antithetical to the medical model. Our first meeting would be more like an assessment of our therapeutic relationship potential. After this first appointment, we would know if we were a good fit for therapy or I might be able to refer you elsewhere. If we decided to work together, we would find a regular, weekly slot.

Once we start the therapy proper, you will have ample space to talk through whatever is going on for you and I will help you to make sense of it. I offer a full hour of therapy rather than the traditional 50 minute therapy hour as I encourage clients to spend the last 10 minutes processing the session with me in order to ensure that it is a conscious process with a clear direction.  I enjoy supporting clients to feel satisfied with their therapy and work hard to provide a good service.

Couples sessions are 80-90 minutes long and are recorded for supervisory purposes. Imago Relationship Therapy mainly comprises facilitation of the Imago dialogue, which is a powerful tool for communication, connection and change - helping couples move from the power struggle into a conscious partnership.

I offer intensive therapy weekends for couples, working from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon in an agreed location. This can be super-helpful for couples in crisis as well as those wanting to work on intimacy issues in the comfort of their own homes.

I also coach individuals and couples in relational issues such as dating and Tantric practices.

Whatever support you are looking for, the best place to start is by contacting me to set up an initial consultation where we can work out how we might work together, so do get in touch.

About me and my therapy practice

I work in London and via Zoom with couples and individual adults. My approach is trauma-informed from vast experience in my personal and professional life. I work holistically and somatically with the body as well as the mind and spirit as a whole system.

I am also a VITA sex, love and relationship coach working with a powerful combination of Imago and Tantra to help couples work on their communication, connection and intimacy.

From September 2024, I start in a wonderful new therapy space that I have found specifically for working with both individuals and couples in a more embodied way that goes beyond talking therapy and is accessed through the breath, mindfulness, sound, movement and energy.

I use embodied practices primarily when working with trauma as I find them hugely useful for shifting trauma that resides in the body and is not so accessible through talking. The most powerful tool I know for this purpose is called aspecting work that is conducted on the floor on cushions, which is why I have sought out a therapy room that has plenty of cushioned floor space. The room I found is in Gloucester Road, Kensington, and is perfect for this work.

Practice description

As a humanistic therapist, my way of working is deeply relational. I focus on processes in the here-and-now, and use the therapeutic relationship to understand other relationships. I understand the therapeutic space as a microcosm of clients' lives - what happens in the therapeutic process is often what happens outside of it too. Recognising and understanding these processes involving behaviours, thoughts and feelings can help clients make changes in order to move towards a more authentic way of being, and to create more meaning and purpose in life.

I work hard to create the right conditions for growth and change, which involves connecting with clients,  building a good therapeutic relationship, respecting my clients' autonomy and capacity for self-growth, and helping to foster self-sufficiency and agency. I am a reliable, ethical and competent practitioner, offering the possibility of in-depth relational work at a level that produces good results.

With couples, I use Imago dialogue, which is a communication system developed by Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt. Imago was popularised in their hugely successful book, Getting the Love You Want - featured on the Oprah Winfrey show multiple times. I was also trained with the legendary Layla Martin, guru of the Tantric Institute of Integrated Sexuality. I use the foundational pillars of Tantra: energy, breath, movement, sound and mindfulness through a powerful and effective range of somatic practices and exercises to help couples with a wide range of issues relating to communication, connection and intimacy. I work a lot with couples where one or both partners have issues rooted in trauma and offer my services weekly, fortnightly or through intensive therapy weekends in clients' homes or private venues away from home.

My first session

I offer a complimentary introductory call via Zoom - usually 20 minutes for individuals and 30 minutes for couples.

I ask couples to complete an intake form before starting.
