About me and my therapy practice

Perhaps you're feeling stuck, anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, or faced with with unwanted life changes? I offer a supportive and creative space for you to find your way through these challenges. I have very often seen that times of crisis can herald the start of a positive transformation and my work is to help this to happen.

I have over 20 years' experience as a coach, counsellor, psychotherapist and mediator. I work with a range of approaches, drawing from trainings in Psychosynthesis, NLP, CBT, Mindfulness, and creative therapies among others. The way we work together can evolve according to what you are drawn to.

I see clients in person in Hove, or via zoom. Generally I suggest we agree a number of sessions to begin with, and review at this point whether more sessions would be useful. I like to review together at regular intervals so that we can reflect on how the sessions are helping and what the next steps may be.

Prior to becoming a therapist I spent many years in organisation development, primarily working to introduce positive approaches to conflict and change for organisations in the public, private and education sectors. This included delivering accredited training courses for mediators, and training mental health first aiders. Since training as a therapist I have also managed 2 counselling services, tutored on counselling training courses, and facilitated mental health and resilience support groups.

Practice description

I think the most important thing I do is listen, really listen, so working with me you will experience being heard, and a warm, empathic response. However I also actively engage with you to try to get to the heart of what has brought you into therapy. This can be through conversation and questions to explore and clarify the issues, or you may find it more effective to use other approaches like drawing, or using objects as  symbols to replay a situation or enact a possible response. I have found that including some brief mindfulness exercises in sessions can help many people to get into a calmer and more creative space - of course this is optional.

I may often pause to summarise what's happening so we can reflect on it. I will check in with you regularly as to how you feel the work is progressing.

My training is what's known as integrative, meaning that I draw from different schools of psychotherapy (such as psychodynamic, CBT, Gestalt, TA, person-centred) , and also that I look at how the different aspects of a person integrate as a whole. Whether we focus on how you navigate your current situation, or on looking at how past events have affected you, is largely up to you and what you are dealing with. However for most people, it's important to connect themes in the present with what happened in the past, and I may bring your attention to this kind of link.

Therapy is an adventure, and it's a privilege to be able to support people at such an important time in their life.

My first session

I offer a brief pre-session questionnaire to help you to clarify what you would like from working together. This is completely optional but many people find it helps them to clarify their needs. If you return it to me before the session, it also means I come to the first session knowing more about you.

The first session is the same length and charged at the same rate as other sessions. Because it's the first time we've met, it may cover a lot of ground. I recommend you allow some time for yourself to reflect afterwards, rather than be rushing into another activity.
