About me and my therapy practice

My own experience as a counsellor has been gained in a wide range of contexts which include; Children, Young people, Parents & adults, specialised agency settings (sexual trauma), educational, social services, public services and private practice. I am experienced in both time limited and open ended contracts.

My approach is built a foundation of the Person-Centred Approach, from a position that each client is uniquely individual, however over the years I have adopted aspects of various other modalities, depending on the needs and requirements that present with the uniqueness of the individual. I aim to provide a non-judgemental, confidential and supportive environment to promote an atmosphere of trust to enable clients to bring to the session what is important for them.

In addition to my core Person-Centred training, I believe I need to be able to communicate skilfully in a wide range of ways across and within a multitude of contexts. I therefore draw on all other experiences of other approaches I have learned along the way. Regular attendance at workshops and additional training has enhanced my self-awareness as well as my perception in noticing what might be useful to explore with the client. I place important emphasis on the skills necessary for using counselling most effectively, regardless of the age, sex or orientation of the client. clients are encouraged by me to develop reflective skills, sometimes through the use of creativity.

Practice description

Prior to your first session I offer a free no obligation telephone call. This will give us both a sense of whether we can work together and I will also be able to tell you at this point if I think I have experience in the area(s) you are struggling with.

If you have experienced trauma, we will explore your support network and if needed work on stabilisation by using techniques to help you manage and cope with your emotions & triggers. This we will do through psycho education and exercises which may include CBT type exercises.

I am able to offer talking or creative therapy, you may even want a combination of both or even prefer to walk and talk. I work with a therapy dog, he loves to comfort you and in the process he might seek out a tummy rub.

My first session

Your first session can feel daunting, the prospect of unpacking your most personal stuff and to a complete stranger. This is not what will happen, I will give you the space and time to build trust with me and we will work at your pace, you only ever need to share what you choose and what you are comfortable with.

At your first session we will look at the counselling relationship, how it works and what to expect. We will discuss your individual needs, how many sessions you might need and how you might like the sessions to look i.e., a creative or talking space or perhaps a mixture of the two.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced and accredited therapist with a supervisory qualification. I offer supervision to students and experienced therapists and consultancy for organisations. I have worked front line with children & YP, with parents & children and adults with MH issues.

In a tailored, professional and confidential space, the sessions will be in person, telephone or video call. I am able to offer a creative and talking processing space, in a way that suits an individual and personal way of working.

As part of good practice, regular reviews regarding the efficacy of the supervision offered are held as part of our contract. This is a reciprocal evaluative process designed to facilitate changes that may be highlighted and negotiated within our supervisory alliance. In addition, supervisee self-assessment and self-evaluation of their work will be considered in con-junction with focus on CPD (continued professional development).

Practice description

I welcome a preliminary discussion regarding individual supervision needs, allowing us both to take the opportunity to see if the service is right for you . This encourages an owning, understanding and active use of any potential power issues, and encourages a mutual ownership, this I feel is vital for effective contracting, evaluating and reviewing of the supervisory contract and the relationship.

As part of the supervisory agreement emergency support by agreement is offered at no extra charge.

If undertaking an organisational contract for external supervision, initial discussion will take place before drawing up an agreed contract, with both the organisation and the supervisee. Once we have agreed we can work together, a draft contract will be drawn up for us to collaborate and agree any deletions or amendments.

My first session

At the first session we will look at the contract and discuss in more details anything that needs adding or omitting.

I also like to begin the relationship by promoting anti-oppressive practice. This is introduced by discussing any overt or covert differences, how they might get in the way of the supervisory relationship and ways we can overcome them.

We will discuss your individual needs and the model(s) you work with. I am Person-Centred but have integrated other models into my work over the years.
