About me and my therapy practice
Hi, Thanks for checking me out. I realise that taking the first step
I am aware that most of my colleagues in the UK (unlike some other countries) like to remain without a past or an idea of how they came to be therapists. I do not hold with this tradition.
Before I took this path, I had worked as a scientific academic researcher, I trained firstly as a Zoologist and was drawn to the behavioural sciences. Further on I worked at the Wellcome Foundation/UCL researching the history of the Psychoanalytic movement. Later I had a lengthy career in the book publishing/media industries.
I have practised as a counsellor for 16 years, in the public and third sectors as well as private practice.
Distilling my years of practice into a few words is not easy, but I suspect that is what is needed here.
So, I put my approach down as this: Most people that I see have come to counselling because Plan A (for example, habitually saying that everything is all right; or doing the same as everybody else appears to be doing) has failed to deliver a sense of satisfaction in their lives, or indeed a sense of being at home in their own skin. Given this, the point of counselling is to discover how this situation came about, and to help people find a new and better directed path to follow in the continuing journey of their lives.
Of course, nothing is ever that simple. Though, I believe that in our work together change is possible and that we can discover this new path.
I am trained in several modalities of counselling and psychotherapy.
I personally hold that travelling without an anchor point in your life can be without a meaningful purpose. I and my colleagues can provide that anchor point, a place of stability and reflection.
I have a room at South Coast Counselling 198 Church Road Hove.
I can work with fortnightly sessions .
I am willing to negotiate fee reductions if appropriate. I already offer reduced fees to people who work in the public sector.
[*Confidentiality is of course important.
Practice description
Life can be difficult and finding someone to help can seem overwhelming at the start.
Every journey begins with the first step
Here is a brief description of what I have become over years of being in practice.
I have over 15 years as an Integrative Counsellor/Psychotherapist, qualifying with a Master's degree. I also have a strong and continuing interest in Jungian depth psychology
I developed my practice whilst working in Inner City London, for the NHS in a large health centre and for various addiction and community-based charity organisations
I am an experienced counsellor, now in private practice.
I have developed a creative approach to my work over the years, as I understand my clients as individuals seeking help not judgement or labels.
I have been a Trustee of the National mental health charity 'Survivors Poetry since 2004
My first session
I offer an initial, no fee, first telephone consultation. This is usually 15 minutes.
I believe that establishing that we can work together usefully is the crucial first step. I work to earn trust and find a way that suits you to facilitate change from old destructive patterns.
I have a strong Jungian side to my work, and I use creativity to move the tyranny of of our own self story to a more nuanced one, where choice is a new possibiility.
Mostly in our first session I listen intently as we start our journey together.
I can work fortnightly if needed and have some flexibility for shift workers and carers. I try and find whatever works best for you
