About me and my therapy practice

Have you experienced trauma in your life and maybe wondering how you can manage the symptoms that arise from that (anxiety, panic etc)? Then I can help you with 8 - 10 sessions of safety & stabilisation psychotherapy and counselling. Working in this way helps you understand the cause and impact of trauma on your thinking process and reactions to some situations in the present day. Stabilisation work includes understanding how the brain is impacted by trauma, grounding techniques and ways to release difficult feelings, helping to create a sense of safety.

Did you have a difficult childhood and need somewhere to explore its impact on you (and your family) today?  I am a specialist trauma trained counsellor, who works as a sessional counsellor with STARS - Dorset Rape Crisis two days a week, and as such can help you explore what you feel, how you remember the past and what you can do to help yourself.  I also have a small private practice.

I am a humanistic integrative counsellor. In other words, I offer person centred counselling drawing from a range of other therapies, including creativity and CBT, to work with you to help overcome your challenges. I offer short session (6-8 weeks) and longer support as agreed between us.  I also offer single session counselling and walk and talk counselling.

I have undertaken extra training to allow me to support you using Zoom, email and telephone.  I was a Samaritans' listener for three years, and I’m happy to accommodate requests for telephone counselling, if this is your preferred method.

We would work together in a safe and confidential space; and I maintain records in accordance with GDPR & the Data Protection Act and I am registered with the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) I have protocols in place to support confidentiality using remote counselling methods.

Practice description

Zoom and face to face counselling sessions currently taking place from a private and confidential space with no interruptions.

Safety & stabilisation is the first stage of a method supporting trauma survivors using the three stage approach of safety & stabilisation, remembrance & morning (trauma processing) and reconnection & integration.  It is a form of counselling/psychotherapy which allows for psychoeducation about the cause and effect of past trauma, on an individual in the present day.  It was first discussed and used by Pierre Janet, and more recently by Judith Herman (1992 & 2015).

Incident Support (Critical Incident) Debriefing

For the purposes of an incident support debrief all arrangements are to be agreed before the debrief event takes place. A contact name and telephone number would be required along with a brief description of the nature of the event and, where available, the number of people who are likely to be involved.

Debriefs can take place both with individuals and in groups of up to seven people.

A debrief is not a counselling session but an opportunity for the people involved to come together to talk through the event, its impact on each individual and to enable people to support each other.

I am an integrative counsellor working in a person centred way and for the purposes of an incident debrief will work with the group for up to 1.5hrs and with individuals in single sessions of up to 50 minutes.

A critical event may be when a work colleague has died unexpectedly or there has been a criminal event which has impacted a group of people such as has happened in a shop.  It is not something that affects one person only, however that person may benefit from a single therapy session of up to 90minutes to help them process the event.

We can chat through what may benefit you.

My first session

During our first session together, I will ask you what's happened to bring you to counselling; ensuring you have an opportunity to say how this has affected you. I will then move on to helping you understand how our work together may evolve; I outline my protocols for working with you, and explore your priorities. We will agree a way of working and the duration this may take.

We will talk about how we contact each other, what the contract is there to outline (limitations to confidentiality - such as breaches of certain legislative requirements, safeguarding). I will also take some basic personal details.

The first session is also an opportunity to decide if we think we are a good fit and can work together.
