About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m Mike and I’m a person-centred counsellor working in Edinburgh. I have worked in a variety of mental health settings and have been a counsellor for over 13 years. I am a registered member of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and abide by their code of ethics. I love my work and try to meet each individual with openness, curiosity and compassion in our work together. When I’m not at work I love spending time in nature from hill-walking to wild swimming, but might equally be found curled up with a good book or film.  I deliver my sessions in English, but am also a proficient Spanish language speaker, so can occasionally dip into Spanish when working with Spanish-speaking individuals to aid mutual understanding. Appointments are 60 minutes and my working days in Newington are Thursday and Friday. Contact me today to book your first appointment, I try to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours as far as possible.

Practice description

In counselling my aim is to provide you with an open and safe space to speak honestly about what is troubling you. It may be that you have a specific issue that you want to talk about, or perhaps are looking to have a neutral person with whom to explore your feelings and to understand your situation in more depth. I try to work creatively to adapt to the needs of an individual – some people simply wish to be heard, some wish to be met with curiosity and be asked questions and some also wish to hear any insight or perspective that I may have to offer.  I welcome enquiries from anyone seeking to understand themselves and their situation better and can offer short and longer-term therapy depending on your specific needs. Person-centred counselling involves building a strong working relationship together, and through exploring our interactions together in the room we can consider patterns and behaviours that come up in your interactions with other people in your life.

My first session

In the initial session I like to try to strike a balance between having a chance to learn about you and vice versa. We can discuss what has brought you to counselling and have an overview of your situation. Equally you will have the chance to ask any questions you have about me and my work, my approach to counselling and any other practical considerations in relation to counselling, e.g. in relation to confidentiality, payment and cancellations. We can have an honest discussion about what you're hoping to get out of counselling and decide whether my approach feels like the right fit for you. From this we might agree to a contract of sessions together, or if you choose not to work with me I can suggest some other options to you if you would be open to this.
