About me and my therapy practice
I am an experienced psychodynamic therapist and an accredited member of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ. I qualified in 1999 and since then have worked in a wide range of settings, including the NHS, education and private practice.
The psychodynamic model recognises that current distress and difficulties may have their roots in early life experiences. These can contribute to how we relate to others, respond to life events and generally feel about ourselves. I will help you to explore and better understand these patterns and experiences and to make some positive changes.
I have additional specialist training and experience in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT), a brief semi-structured model of psychodynamic psychotherapy (16 weeks) which is recommended for use in NHS primary care psychological therapy services by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). I am an accredited DIT therapist {www.bpc.org) and can offer this in my private practice.
DIT works towards identifying a particular pattern in relating to others which contributes to symptoms of psychological stress. This becomes a focus for making sense of difficulties in present day relationships and activities and working towards changes that lead to better, more positive cycles of interactions.
I have experience in working with:
anxiety and depression
bereavement
relationship problems and family conflicts
impact of loss and change
work related stress
personal growth and development
Practice description
There are times in our lives when it can be very useful to share problems with someone who is outside the situation and who is trained to listen and help you explore your difficulties.
I hold a profession qualification and, as a fully accredited member of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ, work within the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Ethical Framework for Good Practice. I continue to develop and update my skills through regular CPD activities.
I provide a confidential and ethical therapy based on respect and working collaboratively. I encourage review of how our work is progressing and how it is helping with the concerns that have brought you to therapy.
My online sessions use Whereby (you do not need an account or app installed for this) In person sessions, if these are possible to arrange as part of a hybrid approach, take place in the Matlock or Belper area of Derbyshire.
I offer time limited work.
For Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) I will discuss possible starting dates with you, to help try and avoid long breaks during the 16 weeks, which may be disruptive to the focus and momentum of the work.
My first session
All approaches to therapy emphasise the importance and quality of the therapeutic relationship in helping to bring about positive change. That is why it is important to find the therapist who is right for you. In the first session and early sessions I will listen to what has led to you seeking help at this time. I will be interested in your childhood and family history and your thoughts and feelings about these. I will explain how I work and we will discuss how I might help with your main concerns and difficulties. The first session will give us an opportunity to get to know one another and think about whether it feels that working together will be helpful for you.
