A Short Introduction To how I Work Theoretically as an Integrative Therapist
When working with you I integrate Person Centred and Cognitive approaches. It is important to me that you have the autonomy to choose the issues and concerns you wish to focus upon and the pace you wish to work at. I work alongside you in a therapeutic relationship built around equality and trust. I am open and honest in relation to all aspects of my client work.
I offer a safe, confidential environment, free from judgement, where I seek to communicate my understanding of your concerns in a deeply empathic way.
As research consistently suggests, the quality of the relationship is the most significant factor for clients reflecting upon how counselling helped them.
I also integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to enhance our work. I introduce (where appropriate) some basic neuroscience and psycho-education to enable clients to more fully understand what contributes to Anxiety, Depression and Stress. I will also ( again if appropriate) introduce clients to certain self-help models to aid the development of coping strategies and build resilience.
Exam Stress
I have extensive experience of working effectively with young people coping with exam stress and anxiety. I use an established CBT model to improve a young person’s ability to successfully prepare for and sit their exams. My work with exam stress has been with A level and GCSE students in addition to undergraduates.
Supervision
Since 2009 I have been a qualified Supervisor of both experienced and trainee counsellors (see supervision profile).
My first session
As mentioned above prior to our first session i offer a free twenty minute introductory phone call.
Our first session together is very important in relation to establishing how we both wish to contract and set the boundaries for our working therapeutic relationship. It is a time for you to share with me what your expectations are in relation to me as your counsellor and the counselling process in general.
This will most likely be the first time we have met or spoken with each other so I give time for us to introduce ourselves. The strictest confidentiality is of utmost importance i explain with honesty any limits to confidentiality which all counsellors have to abide to. Essentially the confidentiality I offer is similar to that offered by your doctor.
In this first session we also look at what you would like to achieve in our relationship and what issues have brought you to counselling. This session is also a time for you to ask me any questions in relation to how I work, the therapeutic model I use, and to finalise payment details.

About me and my therapy practice
Walk and Talk Therapy
With 27 years experience as a Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Senior Accredited therapist I work with adults and specialise in counselling young people. This profile introduces how i practice as a Walk and Talk therapist. Please visit my main Godalming profile if you are not seeking this form of therapy.
What is Walk and Talk Therapy
It is a form of counselling/psychotherapy where confidential sessions take place outside with counsellor and client walking side by side. It is also referred to as Ecotherapy, Walking Therapy or Outdoor Therapy. The pace is always set by the client with the counsellor matching their pace. If the client wishes to pause or sit they are free to do so.
The primary objective of Walk and Talk is to have a therapy session. However walking in the fresh air in a natural environment provides an additional therapeutic context.
I offer you support with issues such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks, Social Anxiety, Phobias, Depression/low mood, Bereavement, Stress and Relationships issues.
The Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy
Walk and Talk combines the health benefits of walking outside with the psychological benefits of talking to a trained therapist. It has been shown to lower levels of anxiety, stress and depression in addition to enhancing a sense of well being.
Bereaved clients find being outside in the changing seasons helpful while working through the stages of grief following the loss of a loved one. Walking relieves tension and stimulates blood flow to the brain improving problem solving and creative thinking.
The natural environment, weather and objects encountered on the walk can be used symbolically and metaphorically as part of the therapy.
Practice description
How I work, my Integrative therapeutic approach to Walking Therapy
My sessions are once a week and usually 50 minutes in duration, the same as face to face and phone sessions.
When working with you I integrate Person Centred and Cognitive approaches. Person Centred counselling is an excellent fit with Walk &Talk Therapy due to it's ethos of shared responsibility, and co -operation
It is also important to me that you have the autonomy to choose the issues and concerns you wish to focus on and the pace you work at. .
As we walk I offer you a safe and confidential relationship free from judgement. I strive to communicate my understanding of your concerns in an empathic manner. I am open and honest in relation to all aspects of my work with you.
Where appropriate I integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to enhance our work. I often introduce some basic neuroscience to help clients better understand the cause of (for example) their anxiety or stress and to help build their resilience.
Some differences between Walking Therapy and Room based counselling.
For some people talking about difficult issues face to face with a counsellor can be daunting. Walk and Talk therapy with the counsellor and client walking side by side can feel less intense and inhibiting. Silences can also feel less intense due to the forward motion of walking and without the awkwardness of face to face counselling.
In Walk and Talk the counsellor does not impart the same control over the therapeutic space. There is shared ownership of the natural environment and counselling process.
Why some people choose Walk and Talk
People often choose this form of therapy if their job is sedentary. Walk and Talk presents for some an alternative option to another chair based situation.
Parents with small babies appreciate the accessibility of Walk and Talk where a sleeping baby in a buggy can be accommodated in a less distracting way than in the counselling room. Dogs who are well behaved are also welcome!
My first session
Walk and Talk boundaries and Confidentiality
The first assessment session is very important and is always carried out face to face online. This is to set the boundaries and discuss how Walk & Talk can best help you as everyone has different reasons for choosing it and what they wish to achieve from it.
We discuss and co- construct a confidentiality agreement including, how to negotiate the rare chance of encountering someone on the walk one of us might know. The strictest confidentiality is of utmost importance. I explain with honesty any limits to confidentiality which all counsellors have to abide to. Essentially the confidentiality I offer is similar to that of your doctor.
I adhere to the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Ethical Framework and observe the same legal rules of confidentiality as traditional face to face counselling settings.
We can also co – construct an agreement around what happens in very extreme weather, for example, a phone or online session instead. In normal circumstances it is your call if the weather is too bad.
This session is also a time for you to ask me any questions in relation to how I work, the therapeutic model I use, and to finalise payment details
Location of Walk and Talk sessions
The first session is where we discuss the location and routes for our Walk and Talk sessions.
I am lucky enough to live and practice in Godalming which is surrounded by beautiful countryside accessible on foot from the town centre in a few minutes.
There are many river walks, meadows and parks where Walk and Talk can take place. As highlighted above I avoid the busy parts of Godalming to enable safe social distancing in our work.
I sometimes can offer Walk and Talk sessions in Guildford where there are many scenic locations that are also easily accessible..
