About me and my therapy practice

Having begun counselling 40 years ago, it has been a constant thread through a career that has included mental health social work, health promotion, adult education and training, counselling in G.P. practice and private practice.

I will work with whatever problems, issues or blocks that you bring to counselling. If you are troubled by behaviours, such as addictions, or physiological symptoms, such as anxiety or panic attacks, then we may do some focused work on these to assist you in gaining control over them.

Talking about your current problems may lead us to make links with unresolved events from the past. Exploring these past events, such as abuse, trauma, family deaths, can result in resolving and healing them, so that they can be laid to rest. Having recently undergone training in working with trauma, I am even more aware of how our bodies hold vital information about our past experiences. Giving attention to our embodied experience in the present can facilitate changing stuck and often unhelpful patterns.

Invariably what happens between us in the therapy room is a reflection of how you are in your life. We can use this information to help shed light on how you can make changes in your relationship with others.

Because everyone is different I tailor my approach accordingly. Thus, I may use cognitive-behavioural methods, gestalt techniques, assertiveness training - and inspiration in the moment! Listening to my intuition is a hallmark of my practice.

I have named my counselling, supervision and healing practice Conversations From The Heart because that is what I do!

About me and my therapy practice

I describe my supervision work as supervisee-centred. This is because I believe that as therapists we provide the best service to our clients when we become as finely tuned an instrument as possible. Thus, I encourage my supervisees to bring the whole of themselves to supervision. I am particularly interested in what is happening in the here-and-now of the supervision session as this may give us valuable information about what is taking place within the counselling. For counsellors based in organizations, the impact of the organization on the therapeutic work is another aspect we will take in to consideration.

As a qualified supervisor I have supervised trainee counsellors through to well-established practitioners, individually and in groups. This has been provided through organizations and my private practice.

I love supervision and I consider it invaluable. Because of this I offer supervision to complementary health practitioners, so that they may have the benefit of a regular supportive yet challenging space for themselves. This can improve the quality of service to the client whilst assisting the practitioner in developing professionally.
