About me and my therapy practice

Hello! I am Jane and am an experienced child an adolescent counsellor using play and the creative arts.

It is sometimes hard for children, especially young children (but also teenagers!) to be able to put their thoughts, feelings and experiences into words and drawing, painting, clay, collage, story-making and role play can often help. It feels safe and natural for children to express themselves in this way. The therapeutic relationship is also paramount and a child or young person finds a safe space with me where there is warmth, laughter, playfulness and a genuine reaching out to understand and really 'be with' them. The work can sometimes be hard for them but it can also be lots of fun. I tend to work on a more long term basis where outcomes are usually also long term but will occasionally work with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques but these are only when relevant to the work.

I am also an experienced primary school Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator and so have considerable professional understanding of some of the difficulties that may be experienced by children on the Autism spectrum, with an ADHD diagnosis, and specific and general learning difficulties and how this impacts upon their mental health. I am also an experienced primary school counsellor and have worked with adolescents in secondary school also.

Being a parent can be both delightful, magical and fulfilling but also challenging and bewildering.  I also work with parents either as individuals or in a pair with a child when they feel that there are or have been difficulties within that relationship. It is often really helpful to have a supportive guide through a part of this journey when it has become stressful and confusing.

Practice description

My practice is in my home. I have a dedicated Therapy Room which has a large range of creative arts resources or use by children and young people.

I am also happy to travel to homes although prefer to work in practice as I feel that it is good for the young person to be able to create a different, separate, meaningful space to think in. If I travel to a home I charge £55 per hour.

I also work Online via Zoom.

My first session

I usually start by having a phone call with the parent of the young person unless the young person is an older teenager and they prefer this. This is to allow them and myself to think about if we will be a good fit. I do not charge for this. If, after this chat, it is agreed that the therapeutic work will start, the first session will go ahead and will be charged at £45 for the 50 minute session. It is always agreed with all parties that the work can stop or be paused if needed.

If an initial session in person is requested by the parent or young person in place of the phone call a £45 is charged.
