My role as Digital Learning Officer within the Member Resources team means that ±õ’m responsible for podcast production and re-commissioning, creating, and developing content for our Learning centre and CPD hub. Over the last few months, ±õ’ve developed a new resource around the theme of depression and young people which has just launched into our CPD hub.

The new resource covers theory, language, meaning making, and concludes with a thought-provoking panel discussion. Kelli Swain-Cowper, Curriculum Lead Mental Health Workforce at Place2Be, delivers the first module, providing an insightful overview of depression and its symptoms from the perspective of young people. She explores the increasing role of schools in supporting the mental health of young people and highlights the importance of early interventions to mitigate the long-term impact of depression.Ìý

Sarah Worley-James, senior accredited counsellor, supervisor, and trainer at Cardiff University, then discusses the impact of tuning into and listening to young adult clients' choice of words when discussing their depression during therapy sessions. She examines how language can influence a client's perception of depression and encourages the consideration of creative ways to support young adult clients in exploring the meaning behind the words they use to express their depression.Ìý

Finally, Jo Holmes, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ’s Children, Young People and Families Lead, facilitates a panel discussion that includes experts Sarah Watson, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ’s Children and Young People Ethics Lead, Sanjay Badhan, a school counsellor in a Birmingham Academy Trust, Kelli Swain-Cowper, and Sarah Worley-James. Together, they discuss some of the challenges between presenting low mood, trauma, and medical diagnoses surrounding depression. They also reflect on the potential risk of over-diagnosing young adults' reactions to life challenges.Ìý

I very much enjoyed working with the experts in developing this resource for our members. We as an organisation aim to develop high quality CPD content and take member feedback on board to provide fresh content. I hope this new resource offers practical insights and strategies for viewers to better understand and support young adults experiencing depression.Ìý
