We encourage members and counselling organisations to have their say in the Welsh Government鈥檚 consultation on its new draft Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy (2024- 2034). The consultation closes on 11 June 2024.

The draft strategy is underpinned by a new ambitious vision that aims to support people in Wales to 鈥渓ive in communities which promote, support and empower them to improve their mental health and wellbeing, and will be free from stigma and discrimination.鈥

It also wants to provide 鈥溾 connected system of support across health, social care, third sector and wider, where people can access the right service, at the right time, and in the right place.鈥

Investment in counselling

Steve Mulligan, our Four Nations Lead, said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e pleased to support the Welsh Government to develop this important strategy.

鈥淲e welcome its focus on early person-centred intervention, ensuring that people can access the right service, at the right time, and in the right place. It鈥檚 also good to see it鈥檚
combined with a much stronger focus on supporting vulnerable people, and communities, with more tailored and appropriate services.

鈥淲e know our 2,800 members in Wales have a vital role to play in delivering this vision.

鈥淭he proposals to reform both primary care, including enhancing GP services with therapy and other core services, as well as the critical work to improve access to a wide range of psychological therapies, including counselling and psychotherapy, are also welcome.鈥
