Editorial
Only a few weeks ago controversy over ourÌýpotential entry to the Health ProfessionsÌýCouncil (HPC) was continuing to rage butÌýduring the summer the picture has changedÌýagain.
Now Anne Milton who holds theÌýbrief for professional regulation has saidÌýthat the new Government has made noÌýdecision on whether or not to endorse theÌýprevious Government’s policy on regulation.ÌýNor are there any specific HPC proposalsÌýfor counselling and psychotherapy, whileÌýthe generic standards of proficiency areÌýunder review. And as Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Chair LynneÌýGabriel explains in her column,Ìýthe General Social Care Council is to beÌýabolished and its social worker registrantsÌýmoved to the HPC. Primary legislation willÌýthen be required to change the HPC toÌýaccommodate the social work professions.ÌýSo whatever happens next, it is clear thatÌýcounsellors and psychotherapists will notÌýbe regulated by the HPC as it currently exists.
We take a look in this issue at how theÌýcoaching profession is developing and whyÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ felt that the time was right to launch aÌýdivision for members who practise as coaches.ÌýI have wondered whether coaching might haveÌýbeen a casualty of the recession but the lawÌýof demand doesn’t seem to apply to coaching.ÌýLike counselling, coaching has diversifiedÌýand adapted and now thrives in many variedÌýcontexts, and the familiar question: ‘What’sÌýthe difference between...?’ is now being hotlyÌýdebated, in the relevant places, in relation toÌýcounselling and coaching.
Many thanks to everyone who wrote to usÌýin response to our request for new columnists.ÌýIt was heartening to have so much interestÌýand so many good and interesting writersÌýto choose from. In this issue we join clientÌýOrla Murray on her journey in psychodynamicÌýpsychotherapy and student Alex Erskine asÌýhe starts the second year of his integrativeÌýcounselling diploma.
