From the editor
Therapy for older people seems to have comeÌýmore into focus over the past year. LastÌýsummer, the Royal College of PsychiatristsÌýcalled for an end to the development of ‘ageless’Ìýmental health services, arguing for the continuation ofÌýspecialist services which understand the nuances thatÌýthe consequences of ageing bring to the management ofÌýmental health problems1; and last autumn, after findingÌýolder people were underrepresented when accessingÌýservices2, the IAPT programme set out to improve accessÌýrates for this age group through the development of aÌýcompetence framework and training curriculum to helpÌýtherapists develop the necessary skills and attitudes.
Whether working in primary care or in specialist services,Ìýpractitioners hoping to engage therapeutically withÌýolder people will appreciate Mike Fox’s empathic andÌýinformative article, this issue. Mike, who has extensiveÌýexperience of working within specialist older people’sÌýservices, explores, in particular, the layering of self as weÌýgrow older: ‘How the person one has become continuesÌýto bear the imprint of previous change and how it wasÌýnegotiated’. Through client work examples, MikeÌýdemonstrates how the act of describing and reflectingÌýupon events within an extensive personal history canÌýenrich and clarify an older person’s sense of who they areÌýand how they became that way. ‘The process of ageing inÌýwhich we are all involved,’ he writes, ‘can lend us empathyÌýwith those who are like us but have progressed further’.
Elsewhere in this issue, Andrew Reeves writes aboutÌýworking with suicidal risk and Sally Flatteau Taylor writesÌýabout working with bereavement; both articles have directÌýrelevance to all of us working in healthcare settings.
We also bring news of the first ever Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Practitioner’sÌýConference. As one of the four specialist divisions takingÌýpart, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Healthcare is delighted to be working withÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Workplace, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Coaching, and the AssociationÌýfor Pastoral and Spiritual Care and Counselling (APSCC)Ìýto deliver this innovative conference. The national eventÌýwill enable practitioners to cut across divisionalÌýboundaries as well as seek out streams dedicated to theÌýinterests of their specialism. We look forward to meetingÌýyou there.
