Editorial

Those of you who have connected with me听through our dedicated LinkedIn group1 will know听that, in addition to my private coaching practice听(and, of course, editing this journal!), I am also听currently in training as a dance movement听psychotherapist. As I write this, I am approaching听completion of my first year of a three-year听Master鈥檚 degree.

In reflecting on the past academic year, I realise听how compartmentalised my working life has听become since I began this journey. The time I听spend in practical, experiential sessions in听university and in clinical placement is spent living听in and through my body: sensing, feeling,听connecting, empathising and attuning to my听peers and my clients. The other half of my week is听devoted to my private coaching clients and to听producing this journal, and in that time I live in the听world of words 鈥 emails, telephone conversations听and video-conferencing, and writing and editing听copy. My dance movement therapy training听exacerbates the fact that 鈥 despite my dance听background 鈥 it is still all too easy for me to听become disembodied when spending the best听part of my day in front of a computer screen, and I听wonder how many of us who work mainly online听or remotely have similar experiences.

So for our cover feature this summer I was听delighted to investigate Clare Myatt鈥檚 embodied,听somatic approach to facilitating change, and her听way of working with clients by connecting听through the body. There鈥檚 a famous quote that is听attributed to the founder of 5Rhythms, Gabrielle听Roth: 鈥業f you put the body in motion, you will听change.鈥 My background as a dancer and my听current training as a dance therapist leads me to听believe that ingrained habits that have proved听resistant to change can be shifted through听working on a deep, emotional, physical, sensory听and somatic level: one that cannot be accessed听through intellect alone. These sentiments are听echoed in our Chair Jo Birch鈥檚 column.听I鈥檇 be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

For all of that, the fact remains that we live in听a digital age and I鈥檓 sure I鈥檓 not alone in听conducting a large part of my coaching practice听virtually, via telephone or Skype. Therefore, I听am also pleased to feature a comprehensive听step-by-step guide to Skype coaching 鈥 or听鈥楽koaching鈥 鈥 by Dr Christian van Nieuwerburgh听and Dimos Kyritsis, in their response to our听special feature on online coaching that听appeared in our launch issue back in January this听year.2 The authors 鈥 who are听 based in the UK听and Greece respectively, and produced this听piece together by conversing remotely 鈥撎齢ighlight the particular benefits of this听approach when working internationally and听cross-culturally. Their article is particularly apt听for this issue, which also sees the launch of our听new Thinking Global series.

Finally, inspired by a new book that suggests听that gender differences should be taken into听account when we coach men and women, coach听and freelance journalist Eve Menezes听Cunningham explores the subject of gender in听coaching and asks, 鈥業s there a 鈥渞ight鈥 way to coach听a woman?鈥 What do you think?

Thanks again for all your positive feedback on听our journal and keep your suggestions for听feature articles coming. I鈥檓 excited and inspired听by the rich diversity of our profession and I hope听you鈥檒l find some of that diversity reflected here in听this edition. Your ideas and contributions are听hugely appreciated.

Have a wonderful summer, everyone!
